| ਇਕਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ |

| Some merely waste away their lives - why have they even come into the world? |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥ |
| manamukh laagae dhoojai bhaaeae || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are attached to the love of duality. |
|
| ਏਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪਗਿ ਖਿਸਿਐ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ |
| eaeh vaelaa fir haathh n aavai pag khisiai pashhuthaaeidhaa ||6|| |
| This opportunity shall not into their hands again; their foot slips, and they come to regret and repent. ||6|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadh pavithra sareeraa || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the body is sanctified. |
|
| ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥ |
| this vich vasai sach gunee geheeraa || |
| The True Lord, the ocean of virtue, dwells within it. |
|
| ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ |
| sacho sach vaekhai sabh thhaaee sach sun mann vasaaeidhaa ||7|| |
| One who sees the Truest of the True everywhere, hears the Truth, and enshrines it within his mind. ||7|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ |
| houmai ganath gur sabadh nivaarae || |
| Egotism and mental calculations are relieved through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਖਹੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ |
| har jeeo hiradhai rakhahu our dhhaarae || |
| Keep the Dear Lord close, and enshrine Him in your heart. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ |
| gur kai sabadh sadhaa saalaahae mil saachae sukh paaeidhaa ||8|| |
| One who praises the Lord forever, through the Guru's Shabad, meets with the True Lord, and finds peace. ||8|| |
|
| ਸੋ ਚੇਤੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਚੇਤਾਏ ॥ |
| so chaethae jis aap chaethaaeae || |
| He alone remembers the Lord, whom the Lord inspires to remember. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadh vasai man aaeae || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He comes to dwell in the mind. |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ |
| aapae vaekhai aapae boojhai aapai aap samaaeidhaa ||9|| |
| He Himself sees, and He Himself understands; He merges all into Himself. ||9|| |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਥੁ ਪਾਈ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ |
| jin man vich vathh paaee soee jaanai || |
| He alone knows, who has placed the object within his mind. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadhae aap pashhaanai || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he comes to understand himself. |
|
| ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ |
| aap pashhaanai soee jan niramal baanee sabadh sunaaeidhaa ||10|| |
| That humble being who understands himself is immaculate. He proclaims the Guru's Bani, and the Word of the Shabad. ||10|| |
|
| ਏਹ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥ |
| eaeh kaaeiaa pavith hai sareer || |
| This body is sanctified and purified; |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਚੇਤੈ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥ |
| gur sabadhee chaethai gunee geheer || |
| through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, it contemplates the Lord, the ocean of virtue. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ |
| anadhin gun gaavai rang raathaa gun kehi gunee samaaeidhaa ||11|| |
| One who chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord night and day, and remains attuned to His Love, chants His Glorious Virtues, immersed in the Glorious Lord. ||11|| |
|
| ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਸਭ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| eaehu sareer sabh mool hai maaeiaa || |
| This body is the source of all Maya; |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae bharam bhulaaeiaa || |
| in love with duality, it is deluded by doubt. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ |
| har n chaethai sadhaa dhukh paaeae bin har chaethae dhukh paaeidhaa ||12|| |
| It does not remember the Lord, and suffers in eternal pain. Without remembering the Lord, it suffers in pain. ||12|| |
|
| ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ |
| j sathigur saevae so paravaan || |
| One who serves the True Guru is approved and respected. |
|
| ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ |
| kaaeiaa hans niramal dhar sachai jaan || |
| His body and soul-swan are immaculate and pure; in the Court of the Lord, he is known to be true. |

| ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਸੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ |
| har saevae har mann vasaaeae sohai har gun gaaeidhaa ||13|| |
| He serves the Lord, and enshrines the Lord in his mind; he is exalted, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||13|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| bin bhaagaa gur saeviaa n jaae || |
| Without good destiny, no one can serve the True Guru. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥ |
| manamukh bhoolae mueae bilalaae || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, and die weeping and wailing. |
|
| ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ |
| jin ko nadhar hovai gur kaeree har jeeo aap milaaeidhaa ||14|| |
| Those who are blessed by the Guru's Glance of Grace - the Dear Lord unites them with Himself. ||14|| |
|
| ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਪਕੇ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥ |
| kaaeiaa kott pakae hattanaalae || |
| In the body fortress, are the solidly-constructed markets. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ |
| guramukh laevai vasath samaalae || |
| The Gurmukh purchases the object, and takes care of it. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਊਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ |
| har kaa naam dhhiaae dhin raathee ootham padhavee paaeidhaa ||15|| |
| Meditating on the Name of the Lord, day and night, he attains the sublime, exalted status. ||15|| |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ |
| aapae sachaa hai sukhadhaathaa || |
| The True Lord Himself is the Giver of peace. |
|
| ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ |
| poorae gur kai sabadh pashhaathaa || |
| Through the Shabad of the Perfect Guru, He is realized. |

| ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ |

| The Formless Lord created the universe of form. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਬਣਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu hukam banaaeiaa || |
| By the Hukam of His Command, He created attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ |
| aapae khael karae sabh karathaa sun saachaa mann vasaaeidhaa ||1|| |
| The Creator Himself stages all the plays; hearing of the True Lord, enshrine Him in your mind. ||1|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਸੂਤਿ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa maaee thrai gun parasooth jamaaeiaa || |
| Maya, the mother, gave birth to the three gunas, the three qualities, |

| ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| chaarae baedh brehamae no furamaaeiaa || |
| and proclaimed the four Vedas to Brahma. |
|
| ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਮਾਹ ਵਾਰ ਥਿਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ |
| varhae maah vaar thhithee kar eis jag mehi sojhee paaeidhaa ||2|| |
| Creating the years, months, days and dates, He infused intelligence into the world. ||2|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰ ॥ |
| gur saevaa thae karanee saar || |
| Service to the Guru is the most excellent action. |
|
| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰ ॥ |
| raam naam raakhahu our dhhaar || |
| Enshrine the Lord's Name within your heart. |
|
| ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਇਸੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ |
| gurabaanee varathee jag anthar eis baanee thae har naam paaeidhaa ||3|| |
| The Word of the Guru's Bani prevails throughout the world; through this Bani, the Lord's Name is obtained. ||3|| |
|
| ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਵਾਦ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ |
| vaedh parrai anadhin vaadh samaalae || |
| He reads the Vedas, but he starts arguments night and day. |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਬਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੇ ॥ |
| naam n chaethai badhhaa jamakaalae || |
| He does not remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he is bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae sadhaa dhukh paaeae thrai gun bharam bhulaaeidhaa ||4|| |
| In the love of duality, he suffers in pain forever; he is deluded by doubt, and confused by the three gunas. ||4|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ |
| guramukh eaekas sio liv laaeae || |
| The Gurmukh is in love with the One Lord alone; |
|
| ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ |
| thribidhh manasaa manehi samaaeae || |
| he submerges in his mind the three-phased desire. |
|
| ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ |
| saachai sabadh sadhaa hai mukathaa maaeiaa mohu chukaaeidhaa ||5|| |
| Through the True Word of the Shabad, he is liberated forever; he renounces emotional attachment to Maya. ||5|| |
|
| ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸੇ ਹੁਣਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥ |
| jo dhhur raathae sae hun raathae || |
| Those who are so pre-ordained to be imbued, are imbued with love for the Lord. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੇ ॥ |
| gur parasaadhee sehajae maathae || |
| By Guru's Grace, they are intuitively intoxicated. |
|
