| ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦ ਭੇਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥੩॥ |
| jab lag sabadh bhaedh nehee aaeiaa thab lag kaal santhaaeae ||3|| |
| As long as the mortal does not come to understand the mystery of the Shabad, the Word of God, he shall continue to be tormented by death. ||3|| |

| ਅਨ ਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥ |
| an ko dhar ghar kabehoo n jaanas eaeko dhar sachiaaraa || |
| Whoever finds the door of the One True Lord, does not know any other house or door. |

| By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status; so says poor Nanak. ||4||3||4|| |

| sagalee rain sovath gal faahee dhinas janjaal gavaaeiaa || |
| He spends the entire night in sleep; the noose is tied around his neck. His day is wasted in worldly entanglements. |

| ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| khin pal gharree nehee prabh jaaniaa jin eihu jagath oupaaeiaa ||1|| |
| He does not know God, who created this world, for a moment, for even an instant. ||1|| |
|
| ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| man rae kio shhoottas dhukh bhaaree || |
| O mortal, how will you escape this terrible disaster? |

| ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਆਵਸਿ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਵਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| kiaa lae aavas kiaa lae jaavas raam japahu gunakaaree ||1|| rehaao || |
| What did you bring with you, and what will you take away? Meditate on the Lord, the Most Worthy and Generous Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਊਂਧਉ ਕਵਲੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਛੀ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ |
| oonadhho kaval manamukh math hoshhee man andhhai sir dhhandhhaa || |
| The heart-lotus of the self-willed manmukh is upside-down; his intellect is shallow; his mind is blind, and his head is entangled in worldly affairs. |

| ਕਾਲੁ ਬਿਕਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗਲਿ ਫੰਧਾ ॥੨॥ |
| kaal bikaal sadhaa sir thaerai bin naavai gal fandhhaa ||2|| |
| Death and re-birth constantly hang over your head; without the Name, your neck shall be caught in the noose. ||2|| |

| ਡਗਰੀ ਚਾਲ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਫੁਨਿ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥ |
| ddagaree chaal naethr fun andhhulae sabadh surath nehee bhaaee || |
| Your steps are unsteady, and your eyes are blind; you are not aware of the Word of the Shabad, O Sibling of Destiny. |

| ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਅੰਧੁਲਉ ਧੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| saasathr baedh thrai gun hai maaeiaa andhhulo dhhandhh kamaaee ||3|| |
| The Shaastras and the Vedas keep the mortal bound to the three modes of Maya, and so he performs his deeds blindly. ||3|| |
|
| ਖੋਇਓ ਮੂਲੁ ਲਾਭੁ ਕਹ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ॥ |
| khoeiou mool laabh keh paavas dhuramath giaan vihoonae || |
| He loses his capital - how can he earn any profit? The evil-minded person has no spiritual wisdom at all. |

| ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਤੀਣੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੫॥ |
| sabadh beechaar raam ras chaakhiaa naanak saach patheenae ||4||4||5|| |
| Contemplating the Shabad, he drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord; O Nanak, his faith is confirmed in the Truth. ||4||4||5|| |

| gur kai sang rehai dhin raathee raam rasan rang raathaa || |
| He remains with the Guru day and night and his tongue savors the savory taste of the Lord's Love. |

| ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਸਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਸਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੧॥ |
| avar n jaanas sabadh pashhaanas anthar jaan pashhaathaa ||1|| |
| He does not know any other; he realizes the Word of the Shabad. He knows and realizes the Lord deep within his own being. ||1|| |
|
| ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਐਸਾ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ |
| so jan aisaa mai man bhaavai || |
| Such a humble person is pleasing to my mind. |
|
| ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| aap maar aparanpar raathaa gur kee kaar kamaavai ||1|| rehaao || |
| He conquers his self-conceit, and is imbued with the Infinite Lord. He serves the Guru. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੋ ॥ |
| anthar baahar purakh niranjan aadh purakh aadhaeso || |
| Deep within my being, and outside as well, is the Immaculate Lord God. I bow humbly before that Primal Lord God. |

| ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਈ ॥ |
| saach rathae sach anmrith jihavaa mithhiaa mail n raaee || |
| Those who are imbued with Truth - their tongues are tinged with Truth; they do not have even an iota of the filth of falsehood. |

| ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| niramal naam anmrith ras chaakhiaa sabadh rathae path paaee ||3|| |
| They taste the sweet Ambrosial Nectar of the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord; imbued with the Shabad, they are blessed with honor. ||3|| |

| ਗੁਣੀ ਗੁਣੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ॥ |
| gunee gunee mil laahaa paavas guramukh naam vaddaaee || |
| The virtuous meet with the virtuous, and earn the profit; as Gurmukh, they obtain the glorious greatness of the Naam. |

| ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥ |
| sagalae dhookh mittehi gur saevaa naanak naam sakhaaee ||4||5||6|| |
| All sorrows are erased, by serving the Guru; O Nanak, the Naam is our only Friend and Companion. ||4||5||6|| |

| The Naam the Name of the Lord is the wealth and support of all; It is enshrined in the heart, by Guru's Grace. |

| ਅਮਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ |
| amar padhaarathh thae kirathaarathh sehaj dhhiaan liv laaeeai ||1|| |
| One who gathers this imperishable wealth is fulfilled, and through intuitive meditation, is lovingly focused on the Lord. ||1|| |

| ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥ |

| O mortal, focus your consciousness on devotional worship of the Lord. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| guramukh raam naam jap hiradhai sehaj saethee ghar jaaeeai ||1|| rehaao || |
| As Gurmukh, meditate on the Name of the Lord in your heart, and you shall return to your home with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥ |
| bharam bhaedh bho kabahu n shhoottas aavath jaath n jaanee || |
| Doubt, separation and fear are never eradicated, and the mortal continues coming and going in reincarnation, as long as he does not know the Lord. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ |
| bin har naam ko mukath n paavas ddoob mueae bin paanee ||2|| |
| Without the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated; they drown and die without water. ||2|| |
|
| ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਸਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਸਿ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥ |
| dhhandhhaa karath sagalee path khovas bharam n mittas gavaaraa || |
| Busy with his worldly affairs, all honor is lost; the ignorant one is not rid of his doubts. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ |
| bin gur sabadh mukath nehee kab hee andhhulae dhhandhh pasaaraa ||3|| |
| Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mortal is never liberated; he remains blindly entangled in the expanse of worldly affairs. ||3|| |

| ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥ |
| akul niranjan sio man maaniaa man hee thae man mooaa || |
| My mind is pleased and appeased with the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. Through the mind itself, the mind is subdued. |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥ |
| anthar baahar eaeko jaaniaa naanak avar n dhooaa ||4||6||7|| |
| Deep within my being, and outside as well, I know only the One Lord. O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||4||6||7|| |

| jagan hom punn thap poojaa dhaeh dhukhee nith dhookh sehai || |
| You may give feasts, make burnt offerings, donate to charity, perform austere penance and worship, and endure pain and suffering in the body. |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ |
| raam naam bin mukath n paavas mukath naam guramukh lehai ||1|| |
| But without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained. As Gurmukh, obtain the Naam and liberation. ||1|| |
|
| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਾ ॥ |
| raam naam bin birathhae jag janamaa || |
| Without the Lord's Name, birth into the world is useless. |
|
| ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਮਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| bikh khaavai bikh bolee bolai bin naavai nihafal mar bhramanaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Without the Name, the mortal eats poison and speaks poisonous words; he dies fruitlessly, and wanders in reincarnation. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪਾਠ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਕਾਲ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| pusathak paath biaakaran vakhaanai sandhhiaa karam thikaal karai || |
| The mortal may read scriptures, study grammar and say his prayers three times a day. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੨॥ |
| bin gur sabadh mukath kehaa praanee raam naam bin ourajh marai ||2|| |
| Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, where is liberation, O mortal? Without the Lord's Name, the mortal is entangled and dies. ||2|| |

| ਡੰਡ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨੁ ਕਰੈ ॥ |
| ddandd kamanddal sikhaa sooth dhhothee theerathh gavan ath bhraman karai || |
| Walking sticks, begging bowls, hair tufts, sacred threads, loin cloths, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and wandering all around |

| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੩॥ |
| raam naam bin saanth n aavai jap har har naam s paar parai ||3|| |
| - without the Lord's Name, peace and tranquility are not obtained. One who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, crosses over to the other side. ||3|| |

| ਜਟਾ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| jattaa mukatt than bhasam lagaaee basathr shhodd than nagan bhaeiaa || |
| The mortal's hair may be matted and tangled upon his head, and he may smear his body with ashes; he may take off his clothes and go naked. |
|
| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਰਤ ਕੈ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਭੇਖੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥ |
| raam naam bin thripath n aavai kirath kai baandhhai bhaekh bhaeiaa ||4|| |
| But without the Lord's Name, he is not satisfied; he wears religious robes, but he is bound by the karma of the actions he committed in past lives. ||4|| |

| ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥ |
| jaethae jeea janth jal thhal meheeal jathr kathr thoo sarab jeeaa || |
| As many beings and creatures as there are in the water, on the land and in the sky - wherever they are, You are with them all, O Lord. |

| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੋਲਿ ਪੀਆ ॥੫॥੭॥੮॥ |
| gur parasaadh raakh lae jan ko har ras naanak jhol peeaa ||5||7||8|| |
| By Guru's Grace, please preserve Your humble servant; O Lord, Nanak stirs up this juice, and drinks it in. ||5||7||8|| |
