| ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥ |
| nikatt n jaanai bolai koorr || |
| Not understanding that the Lord is near, he tells lies. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮੂੜੁ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi moothaa hai moorr || |
| In love and attachment to Maya, the fool is plundered. |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| anthar vasath dhisanthar jaae || |
| That which he seeks is within his own self, but he looks for it outside. |
|
| ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| baajh guroo hai bharam bhulaae ||3|| |
| Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||3|| |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲਿਲਾਟ ॥ |
| jis masathak karam likhiaa lilaatt || |
| One whose good karma is recorded on his forehead |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਕਪਾਟ ॥ |
| sathigur saevae khulhae kapaatt || |
| serves the True Guru; thus the hard and heavy shutters of his mind are opened wide. |

| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| anthar baahar nikattae soe || |
| Within his own being and beyond, he sees the Lord near at hand. |
|
| ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੬॥ |
| jan naanak aavai n jaavai koe ||4||3||16|| |
| O servant Nanak, he does not come and go in reincarnation. ||4||3||16|| |

| Who can kill that person whom You protect, O Lord? |
|
| ਸਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ |
| sabh thujh hee anthar sagal sansaarai || |
| All beings, and the entire universe, is within You. |
|
| ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥ |
| kott oupaav chithavath hai praanee || |
| The mortal thinks up millions of plans, |
|
| ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਕਰੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ |
| so hovai j karai choj viddaanee ||1|| |
| but that alone happens, which the Lord of wondrous plays does. ||1|| |
|
| ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ |
| raakhahu raakhahu kirapaa dhhaar || |
| Save me, save me, O Lord; shower me with Your Mercy. |

| ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| I seek Your Sanctuary, and Your Court. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ |
| jin saeviaa nirabho sukhadhaathaa || |
| Whoever serves the Fearless Lord, the Giver of Peace, |
|
| ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਦੂਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਏਕੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥ |
| thin bho dhoor keeaa eaek paraathaa || |
| is rid of all his fears; he knows the One Lord. |
|
| ਜੋ ਤੂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| jo thoo karehi soee fun hoe || |
| Whatever You do, that alone comes to pass in the end. |
|
| ਮਾਰੈ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| maarai n raakhai dhoojaa koe ||2|| |
| There is no other who can kill or protect us. ||2|| |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਤੂ ਸੋਚਹਿ ਮਾਣਸ ਬਾਣਿ ॥ |
| kiaa thoo sochehi maanas baan || |
| What do you think, with your human understanding? |

| ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ |
| antharajaamee purakh sujaan || |
| The All-knowing Lord is the Searcher of Hearts. |
|
| ਏਕ ਟੇਕ ਏਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ |
| eaek ttaek eaeko aadhhaar || |
| The One and only Lord is my Support and Protection. |
|
| ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ |
| sabh kishh jaanai sirajanehaar ||3|| |
| The Creator Lord knows everything. ||3|| |
|
| ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥ |
| this jan kae sabh kaaj savaar || |
| all his affairs are resolved. |
|
| ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥ |
| this kaa raakhaa eaeko soe || |
| The One Lord is his Protector. |
|
| ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਪੜਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੭॥ |

| We should feel sad, if God were beyond us. |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਰਹਰਿ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae visarai narehar || |
| We should feel sad, if we forget the Lord. |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਏ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae dhoojaa bhaaeae || |
| We should feel sad, if we are in love with duality. |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਕੜੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੧॥ |
| kiaa karreeai jaan rehiaa samaaeae ||1|| |
| But why should we feel sad? The Lord is pervading everywhere. ||1|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਕੜੇ ਕੜਿ ਪਚਿਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi karrae karr pachiaa || |
| In love and attachment to Maya, the mortals are sad, and are consumed by sadness. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਖਪਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| bin naavai bhram bhram bhram khapiaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Without the Name, they wander and wander and wander, and waste away. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae dhoojaa karathaa || |
| We should feel sad, if there were another Creator Lord. |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਅਨਿਆਇ ਕੋ ਮਰਤਾ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae aniaae ko marathaa || |
| We should feel sad, if someone dies by injustice. |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae kishh jaanai naahee || |
| We should feel sad, if something were not known to the Lord. |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਕੜੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥ |
| kiaa karreeai jaan bharapoor samaahee ||2|| |
| But why should we feel sad? The Lord is totally permeating everywhere. ||2|| |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae kishh hoe dhhin(g)aanai || |
| We should feel sad, if God were a tyrant. |
|
| ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਭੂਲਿ ਰੰਞਾਣੈ ॥ |
| tho karreeai jae bhool rannjaanai || |
| We should feel sad, if He made us suffer by mistake. |
|
| ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ਸਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ॥ |
| gur kehiaa jo hoe sabh prabh thae || |
| The Guru says that whatever happens is all by God's Will. |
|
| ਤਬ ਕਾੜਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਚਿੰਤ ਹਮ ਸੋਤੇ ॥੩॥ |
| thab kaarraa shhodd achinth ham sothae ||3|| |
| So I have abandoned sadness, and I now sleep without anxiety. ||3|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੂਹੈ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ |
| prabh thoohai thaakur sabh ko thaeraa || |
| O God, You alone are my Lord and Master; all belong to You. |
|
| ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥ |
| jio bhaavai thio karehi nibaeraa || |
| According to Your Will, You pass judgement. |
|
| ਦੁਤੀਆ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
| dhutheeaa naasath eik rehiaa samaae || |
| There is no other at all; the One Lord is permeating and pervading everywhere. |
|
| ਰਾਖਹੁ ਪੈਜ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੮॥ |

| Without a voice, how is one to sing? |

| ਜੀਲ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਬਜੈ ਰਬਾਬ ॥ |
| jeel binaa kaisae bajai rabaab || |
| Without strings, how is a guitar to be played? |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ॥੧॥ |
| naam binaa birathhae sabh kaaj ||1|| |
| Without the Naam, all affairs are useless. ||1|| |
