| The Lord is in the soul, and the soul is in the Lord. This is realized through the Guru's Teachings. |

| The Ambrosial Word of the Guru's Bani is realized through the Word of the Shabad. Sorrow is dispelled, and egotism is eliminated. ||1|| |

| O Nanak, the disease of egotism is so very deadly. |

| ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤਹ ਏਕਾ ਬੇਦਨ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਧੁਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| When the Appraiser Himself appraises the mortal, then he is not tested again. |

| ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਭਈ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥ |
| jin ko nadhar bhee gur maelae prabh bhaanaa sach soee ||2|| |
| Those who are blessed with His Grace meet with the Guru. They alone are true, who are pleasing to God. ||2|| |

| ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਰੋਗੀ ਧਰਤਿ ਸਭੋਗੀ ॥ |

| Air, water and fire are diseased; the world with its enjoyments is diseased. |

| ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਹ ਸਿ ਰੋਗੀ ਰੋਗੀ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ॥੩॥ |

| Mother, father, Maya and the body are diseased; those united with their relatives are diseased. ||3|| |

| ਰੋਗੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਸਰੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਰੋਗੀ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| rogee brehamaa bisan sarudhraa rogee sagal sansaaraa || |
| Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are diseased; the whole world is diseased. |

| ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਭਏ ਸੇ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥ |
| har padh cheen bheae sae mukathae gur kaa sabadh veechaaraa ||4|| |
| Those who remember the Lord's Feet and contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad are liberated. ||4|| |

| ਰੋਗੀ ਸਾਤ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸਨਦੀਆ ਖੰਡ ਪਤਾਲ ਸਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਭਰੇ ॥ |

| The seven seas are diseased, along with the rivers; the continents and the nether regions of the underworlds are full of disease. |

| ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਸਰਬੀ ਥਾਈ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੫॥ |
| har kae lok s saach suhaelae sarabee thhaaee nadhar karae ||5|| |
| The people of the Lord dwell in Truth and peace; He blesses them with His Grace everywhere. ||5|| |
|
| ਰੋਗੀ ਖਟ ਦਰਸਨ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਾ ਹਠੀ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥ |
| rogee khatt dharasan bhaekhadhhaaree naanaa hathee anaekaa || |
| The six Shaastras are diseased, as are the many who follow the different religious orders. |

| ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਹ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਨਹ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਇਕ ਏਕਾ ॥੬॥ |

| What can the poor Vedas and Bibles do? People do not understand the One and Only Lord. ||6|| |

| ਮਿਠ ਰਸੁ ਖਾਇ ਸੁ ਰੋਗਿ ਭਰੀਜੈ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |

| Eating sweet treats, the mortal is filled with disease; he finds no peace at all. |

| ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਅਨ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਹੀ ॥੭॥ |
| naam visaar chalehi an maarag anth kaal pashhuthaahee ||7|| |
| Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they walk on other paths, and at the very last moment, they regret and repent. ||7|| |

| ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪੜਿਆ ਬਾਦੁ ਬਿਬਾਦੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| theerathh bharamai rog n shhoottas parriaa baadh bibaadh bhaeiaa || |
| Wandering around at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, the mortal is not cured of his disease. Reading scripture, he gets involved in useless arguments. |

| ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਸੁ ਅਧਿਕ ਵਡੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੮॥ |
| dhubidhhaa rog s adhhik vaddaeraa maaeiaa kaa muhathaaj bhaeiaa ||8|| |
| The disease of duality is so very deadly; it causes dependence on Maya. ||8|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਇਆ ॥ |

| One who becomes Gurmukh and praises the True Shabad with the True Lord in his mind is cured of his disease. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥ |
| manamukh bhoolae guramukh bujhaaeiaa || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are deluded and confused, while the Gurmukhs understand. |

| ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| kaaran karathaa karadhaa aaeiaa ||1|| |
| The Creator creates the Cause that causes. ||1|| |

| Deep within my being, I meditate on the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| I shall never forsake the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦੁ ਪੜਣ ਪਠਾਇਆ ॥ |
| pithaa prehalaadh parran pathaaeiaa || |
| Prahlaad's father sent him to school, to learn to read. |
|
| ਲੈ ਪਾਟੀ ਪਾਧੇ ਕੈ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| lai paattee paadhhae kai aaeiaa || |
| He took his writing tablet and went to the teacher. |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹ ਪੜਉ ਅਚਾਰ ॥ |
| naam binaa neh parro achaar || |
| He said, ""I shall not read anything except the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |
|
| ਮੇਰੀ ਪਟੀਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ |
| maeree patteeaa likh dhaehu gobindh muraar ||2|| |
| Write the Lord's Name on my tablet."||2|| |

| ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਸਿਉ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਾਇ ॥ |

| Prahlaad's mother said to her son, |

| ਪਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਨ ਪੜਹੁ ਰਹੀ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥ |
| paravirath n parrahu rehee samajhaae || |
| "I advise you not to read anything except what you are taught." |
|
| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ |
| nirabho dhaathaa har jeeo maerai naal || |
| He answered, ""The Great Giver, my Fearless Lord God is always with me. |
|
| ਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਛੋਡਉ ਤਉ ਕੁਲਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਗਾਲਿ ॥੩॥ |
| jae har shhoddo tho kul laagai gaal ||3|| |
| If I were to forsake the Lord, then my family would be disgraced.""||3|| |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦਿ ਸਭਿ ਚਾਟੜੇ ਵਿਗਾਰੇ ॥ |
| prehalaadh sabh chaattarrae vigaarae || |
| "Prahlaad has corrupted all the other students. |
|
| ਹਮਾਰਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਨ ਸੁਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ |
| hamaaraa kehiaa n sunai aapanae kaaraj savaarae || |
| He does not listen to what I say, and he does his own thing. |
|
| ਸਭ ਨਗਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਈ ॥ |
| sabh nagaree mehi bhagath dhrirraaee || |
| He instigated devotional worship in the townspeople."" |
|
| ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭਾ ਕਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਵਸਾਈ ॥੪॥ |
| dhusatt sabhaa kaa kishh n vasaaee ||4|| |
| The gathering of the wicked people could not do anything against him. ||4|| |
|
| ਸੰਡੈ ਮਰਕੈ ਕੀਈ ਪੂਕਾਰ ॥ |
| sanddai marakai keeee pookaar || |
| Sanda and Marka, his teachers, made the complaint. |
|
| ਸਭੇ ਦੈਤ ਰਹੇ ਝਖ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ |
| sabhae dhaith rehae jhakh maar || |
| All the demons kept trying in vain. |
|
| ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ |
| bhagath janaa kee path raakhai soee || |
| The Lord protected His humble devotee, and preserved his honor. |
|
| ਕੀਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਐ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥ |
| keethae kai kehiai kiaa hoee ||5|| |
| What can be done by mere created beings? ||5|| |
|
| ਕਿਰਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਦੈਤਿ ਰਾਜੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| kirath sanjogee dhaith raaj chalaaeiaa || |
| Because of his past karma, the demon ruled over his kingdom. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ |

| He did not realize the Lord; the Lord Himself confused him. |
