| He started an argument with his son Prahlaad. |

| The blind one did not understand that his death was approaching. ||6|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦੁ ਕੋਠੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਬਾਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਤਾਲਾ ॥ |
| prehalaadh kothae vich raakhiaa baar dheeaa thaalaa || |
| Prahlaad was placed in a cell, and the door was locked. |
|
| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਡਰਈ ਮੇਰੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ |
| nirabho baalak mool n ddaree maerai anthar gur gopaalaa || |
| The fearless child was not afraid at all. He said, ""Within my being, is the Guru, the Lord of the World."" |
|
| ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਰੀਕੀ ਕਰੈ ਅਨਹੋਦਾ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਇਆ ॥ |
| keethaa hovai sareekee karai anehodhaa naao dhharaaeiaa || |
| The created being tried to compete with his Creator, but he assumed this name in vain. |
|
| ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸ ਆਇ ਪਹੁਤਾ ਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ |
| jo dhhur likhiaa suo aae pahuthaa jan sio vaadh rachaaeiaa ||7|| |
| That which was predestined for him has come to pass; he started an argument with the Lord's humble servant. ||7|| |
|
| ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਸਿਉ ਗੁਰਜ ਉਠਾਈ ॥ |
| pithaa prehalaadh sio guraj outhaaee || |
| The father raised the club to strike down Prahlaad, saying, |
|
| ਕਹਾਂ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥ |
| kehaan thumhaaraa jagadhees gusaaee || |
| "Where is your God, the Lord of the Universe, now?" |
|
| ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥ |
| jagajeevan dhaathaa anth sakhaaee || |
| He replied, ""The Life of the World, the Great Giver, is my Help and Support in the end. |
|
| ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੮॥ |
| jeh dhaekhaa theh rehiaa samaaee ||8|| |
| Wherever I look, I see Him permeating and prevailing.""||8|| |
|
| ਥੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੁ ਉਪਾੜਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thhanmha oupaarr har aap dhikhaaeiaa || |
| Tearing down the pillars, the Lord Himself appeared. |
|
| ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਦੈਤੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥ |
| ahankaaree dhaith maar pachaaeiaa || |
| The egotistical demon was killed and destroyed. |
|
| ਭਗਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਵਜੀ ਵਧਾਈ ॥ |
| bhagathaa man aanandh vajee vadhhaaee || |
| The minds of the devotees were filled with bliss, and congratulations poured in. |
|
| ਅਪਨੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੯॥ |
| apanae saevak ko dhae vaddiaaee ||9|| |
| He blessed His servant with glorious greatness. ||9|| |
|
| ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| janman maranaa mohu oupaaeiaa || |
| He created birth, death and attachment. |
|
| ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| aavan jaanaa karathai likh paaeiaa || |
| The Creator has ordained coming and going in reincarnation. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਕੈ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ |
| prehalaadh kai kaaraj har aap dhikhaaeiaa || |
| For the sake of Prahlaad, the Lord Himself appeared. |
|
| ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਬੋਲੁ ਆਗੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੦॥ |
| bhagathaa kaa bol aagai aaeiaa ||10|| |
| The word of the devotee came true. ||10|| |
|
| ਦੇਵ ਕੁਲੀ ਲਖਿਮੀ ਕਉ ਕਰਹਿ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥ |
| dhaev kulee lakhimee ko karehi jaikaar || |
| The gods proclaimed the victory of Lakshmi, and said, |
|
| ਮਾਤਾ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਕਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੁ ॥ |
| maathaa narasingh kaa roop nivaar || |
| "O mother, make this form of the Man-lion disappear!" |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦੁ ਜਨੁ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਆਇ ॥੧੧॥ |
| prehalaadh jan charanee laagaa aae ||11|| |
| The humble servant Prahlaad came and fell at the Lord's Feet. ||11|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥ |
| sathigur naam nidhhaan dhrirraaeiaa || |
| The True Guru implanted the treasure of the Naam within. |
|
| ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਝੂਠੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| raaj maal jhoothee sabh maaeiaa || |
| Power, property and all Maya is false. |
|
| ਲੋਭੀ ਨਰ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ |
| lobhee nar rehae lapattaae || |
| But still, the greedy people continue clinging to them. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧੨॥ |
| har kae naam bin dharageh milai sajaae ||12|| |
| Without the Name of the Lord, the mortals are punished in His Court. ||12|| |

| ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥ |
| kehai naanak sabh ko karae karaaeiaa || |
| Says Nanak, everyone acts as the Lord makes them act. |
|
| ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| sae paravaan jinee har sio chith laaeiaa || |
| They alone are approved and accepted, who focus their consciousness on the Lord. |
|
| ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| bhagathaa kaa angeekaar karadhaa aaeiaa || |
| He has made His devotees His Own. |
|
| ਕਰਤੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥੧॥੨॥ |
| karathai apanaa roop dhikhaaeiaa ||13||1||2|| |
| The Creator has appeared in His Own Form. ||13||1||2|| |

| gur saevaa thae anmrith fal paaeiaa houmai thrisan bujhaaee || |
| Serving the Guru, I obtain the Ambrosial Fruit; my egotism and desire have been quenched. |

| ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ |
| har kaa naam hridhai man vasiaa manasaa manehi samaaee ||1|| |
| The Name of the Lord dwells within my heart and mind, and the desires of my mind are quieted. ||1|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ |
| har jeeo kirapaa karahu maerae piaarae || |
| O Dear Lord, my Beloved, please bless me with Your Mercy. |

| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਦੀਨ ਜਨੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| anadhin har gun dheen jan maangai gur kai sabadh oudhhaarae ||1|| rehaao || |
| Night and day, Your humble servant begs for Your Glorious Praises; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is saved. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਰਤੀ ਅੰਚ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਈ ॥ |
| santh janaa ko jam johi n saakai rathee anch dhookh n laaee || |
| The Messenger of Death cannot even touch the humble Saints; it does not cause them even an iota of suffering or pain. |

| ਆਪਿ ਤਰਹਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| aap tharehi sagalae kul thaarehi jo thaeree saranaaee ||2|| |
| Those who enter Your Sanctuary, Lord, save themselves, and save all their ancestors as well. ||2|| |
|
| ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਹਿ ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਏਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ |
| bhagathaa kee paij rakhehi thoo aapae eaeh thaeree vaddiaaee || |
| You Yourself save the honor of Your devotees; this is Your Glory, O Lord. |

| ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਰਤੀ ਨ ਰਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| janam janam kae kilavikh dhukh kaattehi dhubidhhaa rathee n raaee ||3|| |
| You cleanse them of the sins and the pains of countless incarnations; You love them without even an iota of duality. ||3|| |
|
| ਹਮ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਕਿਛੁ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ |
| ham moorr mugadhh kishh boojhehi naahee thoo aapae dhaehi bujhaaee || |
| I am foolish and ignorant, and understand nothing. You Yourself bless me with understanding. |

| ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥ |
| jo thudhh bhaavai soee karasee avar n karanaa jaaee ||4|| |
| You do whatever You please; nothing else can be done at all. ||4|| |
|
| ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਤੁਧੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਭੂੰਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ |
| jagath oupaae thudhh dhhandhhai laaeiaa bhoonddee kaar kamaaee || |
| Creating the world, You have linked all to their tasks - even the evil deeds which men do. |
|
| ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੂਐ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥ |
| janam padhaarathh jooai haariaa sabadhai surath n paaee ||5|| |
| They lose this precious human life in the gamble, and do not understand the Word of the Shabad. ||5|| |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥ |
| manamukh marehi thin kishhoo n soojhai dhuramath agiaan andhhaaraa || |
| The self-willed manmukhs die, understanding nothing; they are enveloped by the darkness of evil-mindedness and ignorance. |
|
| ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥੬॥ |
| bhavajal paar n paavehi kab hee ddoob mueae bin gur sir bhaaraa ||6|| |
| They do not cross over the terrible world-ocean; without the Guru, they drown and die. ||6|| |
|
| ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਚੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ |
| saachai sabadh rathae jan saachae har prabh aap milaaeae || |
| True are those humble beings who are imbued with the True Shabad; the Lord God unites them with Himself. |

| ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੭॥ |
| gur kee baanee sabadh pashhaathee saach rehae liv laaeae ||7|| |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, they come to understand the Shabad. They remain lovingly focused on the True Lord. ||7|| |

| ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ |
| thoon aap niramal thaerae jan hai niramal gur kai sabadh veechaarae || |
| You Yourself are Immaculate and Pure, and pure are Your humble servants who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |
