| ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਜਮਡੰਡੁ ਲਗੈ ਤਿਨ ਆਇ ॥ |

| Those who go around acting in egotism are struck down by the Messenger of Death with his club. |

| The faithful do not have to go with the Messenger of Death. |

| ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਜਮ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ |
| jin har har har ras naam n paaeiaa thae bhaageheen jam paas || |
| Those who have not obtained the Sublime Essence of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, are most unfortunate; they are led away by the Messenger of Death. |

| ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ ਚੁਭੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
| jio jio chalehi chubhai dhukh paavehi jamakaal sehehi sir ddanddaa hae ||2|| |
| The more they walk away, the deeper it pierces them, and the more they suffer in pain, until finally, the Messenger of Death smashes his club against their heads. ||2|| |
|
| ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਲਹਾਨੁ ॥ |
| bharamae bhoolaa dhukh ghano jam maar karai khulehaan || |
| They wander lost and confused, deceived by doubt, suffering in terrible pain. The Messenger of Death shall beat them to a pulp. |
|
| ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਇਉ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ਤਰਾਸਿ ॥੨॥ |
| jam jandhaar n lagee eio bhoujal tharai tharaas ||2|| |
| The Messenger of Death will not touch you; in this way, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, carrying others across with you. ||2|| |
|
| ਬਾਝਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਬਧੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥ |
| baajhahu guroo achaeth hai sabh badhhee jamakaal || |
| Without the Guru, all are unconscious; they are held in bondage by the Messenger of Death. |

| ਅੰਧੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਸਭ ਬਾਧੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥ |
| andhhee naam n chaethee sabh baadhhee jamakaal || |
| The spiritually blind do not even think of the Naam; they are all bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death. |

| ਉਠਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਆ ਪਰਿਆ ਵਸਿ ਜੰਦਾਰ ॥੧॥ |
| outh chaliaa pashhuthaaeiaa pariaa vas jandhaar ||1|| |
| He arises and departs with regret, and falls into the clutches of the Messenger of Death. ||1|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਜਮ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| bin prabh koe n rakhanehaar mehaa bikatt jam bhaeiaa || |
| Without God, there is no saving grace. The Messenger of Death is cruel and unfeeling. |
|
| ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਡੰਡੁ ॥ |
| jin gur saeviaa aapanaa jamadhooth n laagai ddandd || |
| For those who serve their Guru, there is no punishment at the hands of the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਾਈਆ ਕਟਿਅੜਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥ |
| santh janaa mil bhaaeeaa kattiarraa jamakaal || |
| Meeting with the humble beings, O Siblings of Destiny, the Messenger of Death is conquered. |

| ਸਾਜਨਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| saajan miliai sukh paaeiaa jamadhooth mueae bikh khaae || |
| Meeting your Best Friend, you shall find peace; the Messenger of Death shall take poison and die. |
|
| ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| ghar mehal sach samaaeeai jamakaal n sakai khaae ||2|| |
| In the mansion of the home within the self, we merge in Truth, and the Messenger of Death cannot devour us. ||2|| |
|
| ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਵਸਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥੮॥ |
| chith n aaeiou paarabreham jamakankar vas pariaa ||8|| |
| but still, if you do not come to remember the Supreme Lord God, you shall fall under the power of the Messenger of Death. ||8|| |
|
| ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਭੇਤੁ ॥ |
| jaa jam pakarr chalaaeiaa vanajaariaa mithraa kisai n miliaa bhaeth || |
| When the Messenger of Death seizes and dispatches you, O my merchant friend, no one knows the mystery of where you have gone. |
|
| ਭੇਤੁ ਚੇਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| bhaeth chaeth har kisai n miliou jaa jam pakarr chalaaeiaa || |
| So think of the Lord! No one knows this secret, of when the Messenger of Death will seize you and take you away. |
|
| ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਸੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| anth kaal pashhuthaasee andhhulae jaa jam pakarr chalaaeiaa || |
| At the last moment, you repent-you are so blind!-when the Messenger of Death seizes you and carries you away. |
|
| ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥ |
| kaal jaal jam johi n saakai bhaae bhagath bhai tharanaa || |
| The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear. |

| ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਦੇਵਨੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਓਨੀ ਤਕੜੇ ਪਾਏ ਹਾਥ ॥ |
| eik rathee bilam n dhaevanee vanajaariaa mithraa ounee thakarrae paaeae haathh || |
| You are not allowed a moment's delay, O my merchant friend; the Messenger of Death seizes you with firm hands. |

| ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਾ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਫਾਰਿਆ ਜਮਦੂਤਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਚਲੀ ॥ |
| chithr gupath kaa kaagadh faariaa jamadhoothaa kashhoo n chalee || |
| The accounts of Chitr and Gupt, the recording scribes of the conscious and the subconscious are torn up, and the Messenger of Death cannot do anything. |
|
| ਤਿਨ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪਈ ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੇ ॥ |
| thin jamakaal n viaapee jin sach anmrith peevae || |
| The Messenger of Death does not touch those who drink in the True Ambrosial Nectar. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| guramathee jam johi n saakai saachai naam samaaeiaa || |
| Following the Guru's Teachings, I cannot be touched by the Messenger of Death. I am absorbed in the True Name. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ॥ |
| manamukh hukam n jaananee thin maarae jam jandhaar || |
| The self-willed manmukhs do not know the Lord's Command; they are beaten down by the Messenger of Death. |

| ਦੂੜਾ ਆਇਓਹਿ ਜਮਹਿ ਤਣਾ ॥ਤਿਨ ਆਗਲੜੈ ਮੈ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| dhoorraa aaeiouhi jamehi thanaa || thin aagalarrai mai rehan n jaae || |
| When the powerful Messenger of Death comes, no one can stand against his awesome power. |

| ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥ |
| jamakaal this naerr n aavai jo har har naam dhhiaavaniaa ||6|| |
| The Messenger of Death does not draw near those who meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||6|| |

| ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ਗਰਠੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥ |
| jamakaal garathae karehi pukaaraa || |
| Seized by the Messenger of Death, people cry out and scream. |
|
| ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ |
| jam jaagaathee dhoojai bhaae kar laaeae || |
| The Messenger of Death imposes his tax on those who are attached to duality. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੰਤ ਵਿਹੂਣੀਆ ਮੀਤ ਸਜਣ ਸਭਿ ਜਾਮ ॥ |
| prabh suaamee kanth vihooneeaa meeth sajan sabh jaam || |
| Without God, our Husband, our Lord and Master, all friends and companions are like the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਨਿ ਦੂਤ ਜਮ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਦੇਨੀ ਭੇਤੁ ॥ |
| pakarr chalaaein dhooth jam kisai n dhaenee bhaeth || |
| The Messenger of Death seizes and holds her, and does not tell anyone his secret. |
|
| ਤਿਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੇ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਪੜੀਆਹ ॥ |
| thin dhukh n kabehoo outharai sae jam kai vas parreeaah || |
| Their pain never departs, and they fall into the grip of the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ॥ |
| jamakaal sirahu n outharai thribidhh manasaa || |
| The Messenger of Death hangs over their heads, and they cannot escape the three-phased desire. |

| ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥ |
| hukamee sir jandhaar maarae dhaaeeai || |
| By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads. |

| ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਖਰੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| har jap har vakhar ladhiaa jam jaagaathee naerr n aaeiaa ||2|| |
| I chant and meditate on the Lord, loading the merchandise of the Lord's Name. The Messenger of Death, the tax collector, does not even approach me. ||2|| |
|
| ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਤੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਜਮਿ ਘੁਟੀਐ ॥ |
| maerae man naam binaa jo dhoojai laagae thae saakath nar jam ghutteeai || |
| O my mind, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and attached to duality, those faithless cynics are strangled by the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ ਚੁਭੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |

| saakath badhhik maaeiaadhhaaree thin jam johan laagae || |
| The vicious hunters, the faithless cynics, are hunted down by the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥ |
| jis simarath jam kishhoo n kehai || |
| Remembering Him in meditation, the Messenger of Death shall not touch you. |
|
| ਸਿਮਰਤ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਮਾਰ ॥ |
| simarath raam naahee jam maar || |
| Remembering the Lord in meditation, you shall not be punished by the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਮਾਨੈ ॥੩॥ |
| this naaree ko dhukh n jamaanai ||3|| |
| that woman shall not suffer pain at the hands of the Messenger of Death. ||3|| |

| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਾਟੇ ਜਮ ਜਾਲ ॥੩॥ |
| kar kirapaa kaattae jam jaal ||3|| |
| Showering His Mercy, He has cut away the noose of the Messenger of Death. ||3|| |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| dhookh dharadh jam naerr n aavai || |
| Pain, suffering and the Messenger of Death do not even approach that one, |

| ਸਰਣਿ ਸੂਰ ਫਾਰੇ ਜਮ ਕਾਗਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| saran soor faarae jam kaagar ||1|| rehaao || |
| In the Sanctuary of the spiritual warrior, the account books of the Messenger of Death are torn up. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਮੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਨੇਰੇ ॥੨॥ |

| Serving God, the Messenger of Death will not even approach you. ||2|| |

| ਜਮ ਕੰਕਰੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥ |
| jam kankar naerr n aavee rasanaa har gun gaao ||1|| |
| The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord with the tongue. ||1|| |
|
| ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥ |
| jam pakarriaa thab hee pashhuthaanaa ||6|| |
| Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6|| |
|
| ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥ |
| jam kaa gal jaevarraa nith kaal santhaavai ||4|| |
| The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks; they are constantly tormented by death. ||4|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| guramukh jamakaal naerr n aavai || |
| The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs. |
|
| ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥ |
| jam ddandd sehehi sadhaa dhukh paaeae ||4|| |
| They are beaten by the Messenger of Death with his rod, and they suffer in constant pain. ||4|| |
|
| ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ |
| jamooaa n johai har kee saranaaee || |
| The Messenger of Death does not catch sight of those who enter the Sanctuary of the Lord. |
