| ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਮ ਪਾਕੁ ਹਿਰਹਿ ਪਰ ਦਰਬਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਝੂਠ ਗੁਮਾਨ ॥ |
| karehi som paak hirehi par dharabaa anthar jhooth gumaan || |
| The mortal eats the food which he has carefully prepared, and then steals the wealth of others. His inner being is filled with falsehood and pride. |

| ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਮਨ ਕੈ ਮਾਨ ॥੨॥ |
| saasathr baedh kee bidhh nehee jaanehi biaapae man kai maan ||2|| |
| He knows nothing of the Vedas or the Shaastras; his mind is gripped by pride. ||2|| |

| ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਾਲ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਵਰਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਸਫਰੀ ਦੰਫਾਨ ॥ |
| sandhhiaa kaal karehi sabh varathaa jio safaree dhanfaan || |
| He says his evening prayers, and observes all the fasts, but this is all just a show. |

| ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਊਝੜਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਮਾਨ ॥੩॥ |
| prabhoo bhulaaeae oojharr paaeae nihafal sabh karamaan ||3|| |
| God made him stray from the path, and sent him into the wilderness. All his actions are useless. ||3|| |

| ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋ ਬੈਸਨੌ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥ |
| so giaanee so baisana parrihaaa jis karee kirapaa bhagavaan || |
| He alone is a spiritual teacher, and he alone is a devotee of Vishnu and a scholar, whom the Lord God blesses with His Grace. |

| ਓੁਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਉਧਰਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਨ ॥੪॥ |
| oun sathigur saev param padh paaeiaa oudhhariaa sagal bisvaan ||4|| |
| Serving the True Guru, he obtains the supreme status and saves the whole world. ||4|| |

| ਕਿਆ ਹਮ ਕਥਹ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਬਲਾਨ ॥ |
| kiaa ham kathheh kishh kathh nehee jaaneh prabh bhaavai thivai buolaan || |
| What can I say? I don't know what to say. As God wills, so do I speak. |

| ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਇਕ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਓ ਸਰਾਨ ॥੫॥੨॥ |
| saadhhasangath kee dhhoor eik maango jan naanak paeiou saraan ||5||2|| |
| I ask only for the dust of the feet of the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. Servant Nanak seeks their Sanctuary. ||5||2|| |

| Now, my dancing is over. |

| ਲਾਲੁ ਰਗੀਲਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਿ ਲਹੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| laal rageelaa sehajae paaeiou sathigur bachan leho ||1|| rehaao || |
| I have intuitively obtained my Darling Beloved. Through the Word of the True Guru's Teachings, I found Him. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕੁਆਰ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਬਚਨ ਉਪਹਾਸ ਕਹੋ ॥ |
| kuaar kanniaa jaisae sang sehaeree pria bachan oupehaas keho || |
| The virgin speaks with her friends about her husband and they laugh together; |

| ਜਉ ਸੁਰਿਜਨੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਆਇਓ ਤਬ ਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਜਿ ਲਜੋ ॥੧॥ |
| jo surijan grih bheethar aaeiou thab mukh kaaj lajo ||1|| |
| but when he comes home, she becomes shy, and modestly covers her face. ||1|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਕਨਿਕੋ ਕੋਠਾਰੀ ਚੜਿਓ ਕਬਰੋ ਹੋਤ ਫਿਰੋ ॥ |
| jio kaniko kothaaree charriou kabaro hoth firo || |
| When gold is melted in the crucible, it flows freely everywhere. |

| ਜਬ ਤੇ ਸੁਧ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਬਾਰਹਿ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਥਾਨ ਥਿਰੋ ॥੨॥ |
| jab thae sudhh bheae hai baarehi thab thae thhaan thhiro ||2|| |
| But when it is made into pure solid bars of gold, then it remains stationary. ||2|| |

| ਜਉ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਤਊ ਲਉ ਬਜਿਓ ਮੂਰਤ ਘਰੀ ਪਲੋ ॥ |
| jo dhin rain thoo lo bajiou moorath gharee palo || |
| As long as the days and the nights of one's life last, the clock strikes the hours, minutes and seconds. |

| ਬਜਾਵਨਹਾਰੋ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਓ ਤਬ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਾਜੁ ਨ ਭਇਓ ॥੩॥ |
| bajaavanehaaro ooth sidhhaariou thab fir baaj n bhaeiou ||3|| |
| But when the gong player gets up and leaves, the gong is not sounded again. ||3|| |

| ਜੈਸੇ ਕੁੰਭ ਉਦਕ ਪੂਰਿ ਆਨਿਓ ਤਬ ਓੁਹੁ ਭਿੰਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੋ ॥ |
| jaisae kunbh oudhak poor aaniou thab ouhu bhinn dhrisatto || |
| When the pitcher is filled with water, the water contained within it seems distinct. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁੰਭੁ ਜਲੈ ਮਹਿ ਡਾਰਿਓ ਅੰਭੈ ਅੰਭ ਮਿਲੋ ॥੪॥੩॥ |
| kahu naanak kunbh jalai mehi ddaariou anbhai anbh milo ||4||3|| |
| Says Nanak, when the pitcher is emptied out, the water mingles again with water. ||4||3|| |

| Now if he is asked, what can he say? |

| ਲੈਨੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਨੀਕੋ ਬਾਵਰ ਬਿਖੁ ਸਿਉ ਗਹਿ ਰਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| laino naam anmrith ras neeko baavar bikh sio gehi rehaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| He was supposed to have gathered the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, but instead, the mad-man was busy with poison. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਦੁਲਭ ਜਨਮੁ ਚਿਰੰਕਾਲ ਪਾਇਓ ਜਾਤਉ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲਹਾ ॥ |
| dhulabh janam chirankaal paaeiou jaatho kouddee badhalehaa || |
| This human life, so difficult to obtain, was finally obtained after such a long time. He is losing it in exchange for a shell. |

| ਕਾਥੂਰੀ ਕੋ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਆਇਓ ਲਾਦਿਓ ਕਾਲਰ ਬਿਰਖ ਜਿਵਹਾ ॥੧॥ |
| kaathhooree ko gaahak aaeiou laadhiou kaalar birakh jivehaa ||1|| |
| He came to buy musk, but instead, he has loaded dust and thistle grass. ||1|| |

| ਆਇਓ ਲਾਭੁ ਲਾਭਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਠਾਗਉਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਉਲਝਿ ਪਹਾ ॥ |
| aaeiou laabh laabhan kai thaaee mohan thaagouree sio oulajh pehaa || |
| He comes in search of profits, but he is entangled in the enticing illusion of Maya. |

| ਕਾਚ ਬਾਦਰੈ ਲਾਲੁ ਖੋਈ ਹੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਕਦਿ ਲਹਾ ॥੨॥ |
| kaach baadharai laal khoee hai fir eihu aousar kadh lehaa ||2|| |
| He loses the jewel, in exchange for mere glass. When will he have this blessed opportunity again? ||2|| |

| ਸਗਲ ਪਰਾਧ ਏਕੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਛੋਡਹ ਦਾਸਿ ਭਜਹਾ ॥ |
| sagal paraadhh eaek gun naahee thaakur shhoddeh dhaas bhajehaa || |
| He is full of sins, and he has not even one redeeming virtue. Forsaking his Lord and Master, he is involved with Maya, God's slave. |

| ਆਈ ਮਸਟਿ ਜੜਵਤ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਜਿਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਂਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਹਾ ॥੩॥ |
| aaee masatt jarravath kee niaaee jio thasakar dhar saannihehaa ||3|| |
| And when the final silence comes, like inanimate matter, he is caught like a thief at the door. ||3|| |

| ਆਨ ਉਪਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਸੂਝੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਰਿ ਰਹਾ ॥ |
| aan oupaao n kooo soojhai har dhaasaa saranee par rehaa || |
| I cannot see any other way out. I seek the Sanctuary of the Lord's slaves. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਜਉ ਸਗਲੇ ਅਉਗਨ ਮੇਟਿ ਧਰਹਾ ॥੪॥੪॥ |
| kahu naanak thab hee man shhutteeai jo sagalae aougan maett dhharehaa ||4||4|| |
| Says Nanak, the mortal is emancipated, only when all his demerits and faults are erased and eradicated. ||4||4|| |

| O mother, my patience is gone. I am in love with my Husband Lord. |

| There are so many kinds of incomparable pleasures, but I am not interested in any of them. ||1||Pause|| |

| nis baasur pria pria mukh ttaero nanaeedh palak nehee jaagiou || |
| Night and day, I utter, ""Pri-a, Pri-a - Beloved, Beloved"" with my mouth. I cannot sleep, even for an instant; I remain awake and aware. |

| haar kajar basathr anik seegaar rae bin pir sabhai bikh laagiou ||1|| |
| Necklaces, eye make-up, fancy clothes and decorations - without my Husband Lord, these are all poison to me. ||1|| |
