No one blocks the way of those who are blessed with the Banner of the True Word of the Shabad. |

Hearing, understanding and speaking Truth, one is called to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||18|| |

ਪਹਿਰਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥ |
pehiraa agan hivai ghar baadhhaa bhojan saar karaaee || |
If I dressed myself in fire, and built my house of snow, and made iron my food; |

ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥ |
sagalae dhookh paanee kar peevaa dhharathee haak chalaaee || |
and if I were to drink in all pain like water, and drive the entire earth before me; |

ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਅੰਬਰੁ ਤੋਲੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਟੰਕੁ ਚੜਾਈ ॥ |
dhhar thaaraajee anbar tholee pishhai ttank charraaee || |
and if I were to place the earth upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin; |

ਏਵਡੁ ਵਧਾ ਮਾਵਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਸੈ ਨਥਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥ |
eaevadd vadhhaa maavaa naahee sabhasai nathh chalaaee || |
and if I were to become so great that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all; |

ਏਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥ |
eaethaa thaan hovai man andhar karee bh aakh karaaee || |
and if I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do my bidding-so what? |

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਤੇਵਡ ਦਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ |
jaevadd saahib thaevadd dhaathee dhae dhae karae rajaaee || |
As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts. He bestows them according to His Will. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ |
naanak nadhar karae jis oupar sach naam vaddiaaee ||1|| |
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1|| |

The mouth is not satisfied by speaking, and the ears are not satisfied by hearing. |

ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਰਜੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕ ਇਕ ਵੰਨ ॥ |
akhee dhaekh n rajeeaa gun gaahak eik vann || |
The eyes are not satisfied by seeing-each organ seeks out one sensory quality. |

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਲੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
bhukhiaa bhukh n outharai galee bhukh n jaae || |
The hunger of the hungry is not appeased; by mere words, hunger is not relieved. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
naanak bhukhaa thaa rajai jaa gun kehi gunee samaae ||2|| |
O Nanak, hunger is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Praiseworthy Lord. ||2|| |

Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood. |

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਬੰਨਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥ |
vin sachae koorriaar bann chalaaeeai || |
Without the True One, the false ones are bound and gagged and driven off. |
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਰਲਾਈਐ ॥ |
vin sachae than shhaar shhaar ralaaeeai || |
Without the True One, the body is just ashes, and it mingles again with ashes. |
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਜਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥ |
vin sachae sabh bhukh j paijhai khaaeeai || |
Without the True Ome, all food and clothes are unsatisfying. |
|
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ |
vin sachae dharabaar koorr n paaeeai || |
Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord's Court. |

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥ |
koorrai laalach lag mehal khuaaeeai || |
Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is lost. |

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਓ ਠਗਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ |
sabh jag thagiou thag aaeeai jaaeeai || |
The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation. |

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੧੯॥ |
than mehi thrisanaa ag sabadh bujhaaeeai ||19|| |
Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19|| |

O Nanak, the Guru is the tree of contentment, with flowers of faith, and fruits of spiritual wisdom. |

ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਪਕੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥ |
ras rasiaa hariaa sadhaa pakai karam dhhiaan || |
Watered with the Lord's Love, it remains forever green; through the karma of good deeds and meditation, it ripens. |

ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਖਾਦਾ ਲਹੈ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ |
path kae saadh khaadhaa lehai dhaanaa kai sir dhaan ||1|| |
Honor is obtained by eating this tasty dish; of all gifts, this is the greatest gift. ||1|| |

The Guru is the tree of gold, with leaves of coral, and blossoms of jewels and rubies. |

ਤਿਤੁ ਫਲ ਰਤਨ ਲਗਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਖਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥ |
thith fal rathan lagehi mukh bhaakhith hiradhai ridhai nihaal || |
The Words from His Mouth are fruits of jewels. Within His Heart, He beholds the Lord. |

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ॥ |
naanak karam hovai mukh masathak likhiaa hovai laekh || |
O Nanak, He is obtained by those, upon whose faces and foreheads such pre-recorded destiny is written. |

ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ |
athisath theerathh gur kee charanee poojai sadhaa visaekh || |
The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are contained in the constant worship of the feet of the Exalted Guru. |

ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਕੋਪੁ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਦੀਆ ਅਗਿ ॥ |
hans haeth lobh kop chaarae nadheeaa ag || |
Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire. |

ਪਵਹਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਲਗਿ ॥੨॥ |
pavehi dhajhehi naanakaa thareeai karamee lag ||2|| |
Falling into them, one is burned, O Nanak! One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds. ||2|| |

While you are alive, conquer death, and you shall have no regrets in the end. |

ਝੂਠਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥ |
jhoothaa eihu sansaar kin samajhaaeeai || |
This world is false, but only a few understand this. |
|
ਸਚਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਈਐ ॥ |
sach n dhharae piaar dhhandhhai dhhaaeeai || |
People do not enshrine love for the Truth; they chase after worldly affairs instead. |

ਕਾਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਖੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆਈਐ ॥ |
kaal buraa khai kaal sir dhuneeaaeeai || |
The terrible time of death and annihilation hovers over the heads of the world. |
|
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥ |
hukamee sir jandhaar maarae dhaaeeai || |
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads. |

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥ |
aapae dhaee piaar mann vasaaeeai || |
The Lord Himself gives His Love, and enshrines it within their minds. |
|
ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਚਸਾ ਵਿਲੰਮੁ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ |
muhath n chasaa vilanm bhareeai paaeeai || |
Not a moment or an instant's delay is permitted, when one's measure of life is full. |

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੦॥ |
gur parasaadhee bujh sach samaaeeai ||20|| |
By Guru's Grace, one comes to know the True One, and is absorbed into Him. ||20|| |

Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and nim fruit |

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥ |
man mukh vasehi this jis thoon chith n aavehee || |
these bitter poisons lodge in the minds and mouths of those who do not remember You |

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੰਢਨਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ |
naanak keheeai kis handtan karamaa baaharae ||1|| |
