ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥ |
lakh lasakar lakh vaajae naejae lakh outh karehi salaam || |
You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances, and thousands of men to rise and salute you. |

ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ |
lakhaa oupar furamaaeis thaeree lakh outh raakhehi maan || |
Your rule may extend over thousands of miles, and thousands of men may rise to honor you. |

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ |
jaan path laekhai naa pavai thaan sabh niraafal kaam ||1|| |
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1|| |
|
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ |
har kae naam binaa jag dhhandhhaa || |
Without the Name of the Lord, the world is in turmoil. |
|
ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
jae bahuthaa samajhaaeeai bholaa bhee so andhho andhhaa ||1|| rehaao || |
Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blind. ||1||Pause|| |

ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ |
lakh khatteeahi lakh sanjeeahi khaajehi lakh aavehi lakh jaahi || |
You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go. |
|
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ |
jaan path laekhai naa pavai thaan jeea kithhai fir paahi ||2|| |
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2|| |

ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ |
lakh saasath samajhaavanee lakh panddith parrehi puraan || |
Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him; |

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥ |
jaan path laekhai naa pavai thaan sabhae kuparavaan ||3|| |
but, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3|| |
|
ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ |
sach naam path oopajai karam naam karathaar || |
Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator. |

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥ |
ahinis hiradhai jae vasai naanak nadharee paar ||4||1||31|| |
If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31|| |

ਦੀਵਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਲੁ ॥ |
dheevaa maeraa eaek naam dhukh vich paaeiaa thael || |
The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it. |

ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥ |
oun chaanan ouhu sokhiaa chookaa jam sio mael ||1|| |
Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1|| |
|
ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
lokaa math ko fakarr paae || |
O people, do not make fun of me. |
|
ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
lakh marriaa kar eaekathae eaek rathee lae bhaahi ||1|| rehaao || |
Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause|| |
|
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ |
pindd pathal maeree kaeso kiriaa sach naam karathaar || |
The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony. |

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
aithhai outhhai aagai paashhai eaehu maeraa aadhhaar ||2|| |
Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2|| |

ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥ |
gang banaaras sifath thumaaree naavai aatham raao || |
The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there. |

ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥ |
sachaa naavan thaan thheeai jaan ahinis laagai bhaao ||3|| |
That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3|| |
|
ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
eik lokee hor shhamishharee braahaman vatt pindd khaae || |
The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them! |

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥ |
naanak pindd bakhasees kaa kabehoon nikhoottas naahi ||4||2||32|| |
O Nanak, the rice balls of the Lord are a gift which is never exhausted. ||4||2||32|| |

ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਏ ॥ |
dhaevathiaa dharasan kai thaaee dhookh bhookh theerathh keeeae || |
The Gods yearning for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines. |

ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥ |
jogee jathee jugath mehi rehathae kar kar bhagavae bhaekh bheae ||1|| |
The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1|| |

ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥ |
tho kaaran saahibaa rang rathae || |
For Your sake, O Lord Master, they are imbued with love. |
|
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
thaerae naam anaekaa roop ananthaa kehan n jaahee thaerae gun kaethae ||1|| rehaao || |
Your Names are so many, and Your Forms are endless. No one can tell how may Glorious Virtues You have. ||1||Pause|| |

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥ |
dhar ghar mehalaa hasathee ghorrae shhodd vilaaeith dhaes geae || |
Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands. |

ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥ |
peer paekaanbar saalik saadhik shhoddee dhuneeaa thhaae peae ||2|| |
The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2|| |

ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥ |
saadh sehaj sukh ras kas thajeealae kaaparr shhoddae chamarr leeeae || |
Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins. |

ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥ |
dhukheeeae dharadhavandh dhar thaerai naam rathae dharavaes bheae ||3|| |
Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3|| |

ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥ |
khalarree khaparee lakarree chamarree sikhaa sooth dhhothee keenhee || |
Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths. |

ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥ |
thoon saahib ho saangee thaeraa pranavai naanak jaath kaisee ||4||1||33|| |
You are the Lord Master, I am just Your puppet. Prays Nanak, what is my social status to be? ||4||1||33|| |
