| ਲਿਖੇ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥ |
| likhae baajhahu surath naahee bol bol gavaaeeai || |
| Without pre-ordained destiny, understanding is not attained; talking and babbling, one wastes his life away. |

| ਜਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੀਐ ਭਲਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਿਖਾਈਐ ॥ |
| jithhai jaae beheeai bhalaa keheeai surath sabadh likhaaeeai || |
| Wherever you go and sit, speak well, and write the Word of the Shabad in your consciousness. |

| ਕਾਇਆ ਕੂੜਿ ਵਿਗਾੜਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਨਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ |
| kaaeiaa koorr vigaarr kaahae naaeeai ||1|| |
| Why bother to wash the body which is polluted by falsehood? ||1|| |

| ਤਾ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਆ ਕਹਣੁ ਜਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thaa mai kehiaa kehan jaa thujhai kehaaeiaa || |
| When I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak. |
|
| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ |
| anmrith har kaa naam maerai man bhaaeiaa || |
| The Ambrosial Name of the Lord is pleasing to my mind. |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਖਿ ਡੇਰਾ ਢਾਹਿਆ ॥ |
| naam meethaa manehi laagaa dhookh ddaeraa dtaahiaa || |
| The Naam, the Name of the Lord, seems so sweet to my mind; it has destroyed the dwelling of pain. |
|
| ਸੂਖੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਆਇ ਵਸਿਆ ਜਾਮਿ ਤੈ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| sookh man mehi aae vasiaa jaam thai furamaaeiaa || |
| Peace came to dwell in my mind, when You gave the Order. |
|
| ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| nadhar thudhh aradhaas maeree jinn aap oupaaeiaa || |
| It is Yours to bestow Your Grace, and it is mine to speak this prayer; You created Yourself. |

| ਤਾ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਆ ਕਹਣੁ ਜਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| thaa mai kehiaa kehan jaa thujhai kehaaeiaa ||2|| |
| When I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak. ||2|| |
|
| ਵਾਰੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਢਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| vaaree khasam kadtaaeae kirath kamaavanaa || |
| The Lord and Master gives them their turn, according to the deeds they have done. |
|
| ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਖਿ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| mandhaa kisai n aakh jhagarraa paavanaa || |
| Do not speak ill of others, or get involved in arguments. |
|
| ਨਹ ਪਾਇ ਝਗੜਾ ਸੁਆਮਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੁ ਵਞਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| neh paae jhagarraa suaam saethee aap aap vanjaavanaa || |
| Do not get into arguments with the Lord, or you shall ruin yourself. |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਰੀਕੀ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਰੂਆਵਣਾ ॥ |
| jis naal sangath kar sareekee jaae kiaa rooaavanaa || |
| If you challenge the One, with whom you must abide, you will cry in the end. |
|
| ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ਸਹਣਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਹਣਾ ਆਖਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| jo dhaee sehanaa manehi kehanaa aakh naahee vaavanaa || |
| Be satisfied with what God gives you; tell your mind not to complain uselessly. |
|
| ਵਾਰੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਢਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ॥੩॥ |
| vaaree khasam kadtaaeae kirath kamaavanaa ||3|| |
| The Lord and Master gives them their turn, according to the deeds they have done. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥ |
| sabh oupaaeean aap aapae nadhar karae || |
| He Himself created all, and He blesses then with His Glance of Grace. |
|
| ਕਉੜਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਗੈ ਮੀਠਾ ਸਭ ਮਾਗੈ ॥ |
| kourraa koe n maagai meethaa sabh maagai || |
| No one asks for that which is bitter; everyone asks for sweets. |
|
| ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ਮੀਠਾ ਮੰਗਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਖਸਮ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ॥ |
| sabh koe meethaa mang dhaekhai khasam bhaavai so karae || |
| Let everyone ask for sweets, and behold, it is as the Lord wills. |
|
| ਕਿਛੁ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰਣੀ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਸਮਸਰੇ ॥ |
| kishh punn dhaan anaek karanee naam thul n samasarae || |
| Giving donations to charity, and performing various religious rituals are not equal to the contemplation of the Naam. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਦੇ ॥ |
| naanakaa jin naam miliaa karam hoaa dhhur kadhae || |
| O Nanak, those who are blessed with the Naam have had such good karma pre-ordained. |
|
| ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥ |
| sabh oupaaeean aap aapae nadhar karae ||4||1|| |
| He Himself created all, and He blesses them with His Glance of Grace. ||4||1|| |

| Show mercy to me, that I may chant Your Name. |

| ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ |
| sabh oupaaeeai aap aapae sarab samaanaa || |
| You Yourself created all, and You are pervading among all. |
|
| ਸਰਬੇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਉਪਾਇ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਈਆ ॥ |
| sarabae samaanaa aap thoohai oupaae dhhandhhai laaeeaa || |
| You Yourself are pervading among all, and You link them to their tasks. |
|
| ਇਕਿ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਕੀਏ ਰਾਜੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਿਖ ਭਵਾਈਆ ॥ |
| eik thujh hee keeeae raajae eikanaa bhikh bhavaaeeaa || |
| Some, You have made kings, while others go about begging. |
|
| ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤੁਝੁ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਏਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ॥ |
| lobh mohu thujh keeaa meethaa eaeth bharam bhulaanaa || |
| You have made greed and emotional attachment seem sweet; they are deluded by this delusion. |
|
| ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਪਣੀ ਤਾਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ |
| sadhaa dhaeiaa karahu apanee thaam naam vakhaanaa ||1|| |
| Be ever merciful to me; only then can I chant Your Name. ||1|| |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥ |
| naam thaeraa hai saachaa sadhaa mai man bhaanaa || |
| Your Name is True, and ever pleasing to my mind. |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ |
| dhookh gaeiaa sukh aae samaanaa || |
| My pains are dispelled, and I am permeated with peace. |
|
| ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣਾ ॥ |
| gaavan sur nar sugharr sujaanaa || |
| The angels, the mortals and the silent sages sing of You. |
|
| ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਹੇ ॥ |
| sur nar sugharr sujaan gaavehi jo thaerai man bhaavehae || |
| The angels, the mortals and the silent sages sing of You; they are pleasing to Your Mind. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੇ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohae chaethehi naahee ahilaa janam gavaavehae || |
| Enticed by Maya, they do not remember the Lord, and they waste away their lives in vain. |
|
| ਇਕਿ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਮੂਲੇ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ |
| eik moorr mugadhh n chaethehi moolae jo aaeiaa this jaanaa || |
| Some fools and idiots never think of the Lord; whoever has come, shall have to go. |
|
| ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੨॥ |
| naam thaeraa sadhaa saachaa soe mai man bhaanaa ||2|| |
| Your Name is True, and ever pleasing to my mind. ||2|| |
|
| ਤੇਰਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ |
| thaeraa vakhath suhaavaa anmrith thaeree baanee || |
| Beauteous is Your time, O Lord; the Bani of Your Word is Ambrosial Nectar. |
|
| ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਾਉ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥ |
| saevak saevehi bhaao kar laagaa saao paraanee || |
| Your servants serve You with love; these mortals are attached to Your essence. |
|
| ਸਾਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| saao praanee thinaa laagaa jinee anmrith paaeiaa || |
| Those mortals are attached to Your essence, who are blessed with the Ambrosial Name. |
|
| ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਜੋਇ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਿਤ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
| naam thaerai joe raathae nith charrehi savaaeiaa || |
| Those who are imbued with Your Name, prosper more and more, day by day. |
|
| ਇਕੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੀ ॥ |
| eik karam dhharam n hoe sanjam jaam n eaek pashhaanee || |
| Some do not practice good deeds, or live righteously; nor do they practice self-restraint. They do not realize the One Lord. |
|
| ਵਖਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥ |
| vakhath suhaavaa sadhaa thaeraa anmrith thaeree baanee ||3|| |
| Ever beauteous is Your time, O Lord; the Bani of Your Word is Ambrosial Nectar. ||3|| |
|
| ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਵੈ ॥ |
| ho balihaaree saachae naavai || |
| I am a sacrifice to the True Name. |
