Shalok, Third Mehl: |

ਪਰਥਾਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸਾਝੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਹਾਨੈ ॥ |
parathhaae saakhee mehaa purakh boladhae saajhee sagal jehaanai || |
Great men speak the teachings by relating them to individual situations, but the whole world shares in them. |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਭਉ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ |
guramukh hoe s bho karae aapanaa aap pashhaanai || |
One who becomes Gurmukh knows the Fear of God, and realizes his own self. |
|
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ |
gur parasaadhee jeevath marai thaa man hee thae man maanai || |
If, by Guru's Grace, one remains dead while yet alive, the mind becomes content in itself. |

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਥਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੈ ॥੧॥ |
jin ko man kee paratheeth naahee naanak sae kiaa kathhehi giaanai ||1|| |
Those who have no faith in their own minds, O Nanak - how can they speak of spiritual wisdom? ||1|| |

Third Mehl: |
|
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਓ ਅੰਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਹੁਤਾ ਆਇ ॥ |
guramukh chith n laaeiou anth dhukh pahuthaa aae || |
Those who do not focus their consciousness on the Lord, as Gurmukh, suffer pain and grief in the end. |
|
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਆਂ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
andharahu baaharahu andhhiaaan sudhh n kaaee paae || |
They are blind, inwardly and outwardly, and they do not understand anything. |
|
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਕਤੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖਾਇ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ |
panddith thin kee barakathee sabh jagath khaae jo rathae har naae || |
O Pandit, O religious scholar, the whole world is fed for the sake of those who are attuned to the Lord's Name. |
|
ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ |
jin gur kai sabadh salaahiaa har sio rehae samaae || |
Those who praise the Word of the Guru's Shabad, remain blended with the Lord. |

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
panddith dhoojai bhaae barakath n hovee naa dhhan palai paae || |
O Pandit, O religious scholar, no one is satisfied, and no one finds true wealth through the love of duality. |
|
ਪੜਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ |
parr thhakae santhokh n aaeiou anadhin jalath vihaae || |
They have grown weary of reading scriptures, but still, they do not find contentment, and they pass their lives burning, night and day. |
|
ਕੂਕ ਪੂਕਾਰ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
kook pookaar n chukee naa sansaa vichahu jaae || |
Their cries and complaints never end, and doubt does not depart from within them. |
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
naanak naam vihooniaa muhi kaalai outh jaae ||2|| |
O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they rise up and depart with blackened faces. ||2|| |

|
ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਮੇਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਸਾਈ ॥ |
har sajan mael piaarae mil panthh dhasaaee || |
O Beloved, lead me to meet my True Friend; meeting with Him, I shall ask Him to show me the Path. |
|
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਦਸੇ ਮਿਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
jo har dhasae mith this ho bal jaaee || |
I am a sacrifice to that Friend, who shows it to me. |
|
ਗੁਣ ਸਾਝੀ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ |
gun saajhee thin sio karee har naam dhhiaaee || |
I share His Virtues with Him, and meditate on the Lord's Name. |
|
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵੀ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਿਤ ਸੇਵਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
har saevee piaaraa nith saev har sukh paaee || |
I serve my Beloved Lord forever; serving the Lord, I have found peace. |

ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੨॥ |
balihaaree sathigur this jin sojhee paaee ||12|| |
I am a sacrifice to the True Guru, who has imparted this understanding to me. ||12|| |

|
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਜੇ ਵੇਦ ਪੜੈ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
panddith mail n chukee jae vaedh parrai jug chaar || |
O Pandit, O religious scholar, your filth shall not be erased, even if you read the Vedas for four ages. |
|
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥ |
thrai gun maaeiaa mool hai vich houmai naam visaar || |
The three qualities are the roots of Maya; in egotism, one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |
|
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੂਲੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ॥ |
panddith bhoolae dhoojai laagae maaeiaa kai vaapaar || |
The Pandits are deluded, attached to duality, and they deal only in Maya. |
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁਖਿਆ ਮੁਏ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ |
anthar thrisanaa bhukh hai moorakh bhukhiaa mueae gavaar || |
They are filled with thirst and hunger; the ignorant fools starve to death. |
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ |
sathigur saeviai sukh paaeiaa sachai sabadh veechaar || |
Serving the True Guru, peace is obtained, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. |

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਗਈ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ |
andharahu thrisanaa bhukh gee sachai naae piaar || |
Hunger and thirst have departed from within me; I am in love with the True Name. |
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਜੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
naanak naam rathae sehajae rajae jinaa har rakhiaa our dhhaar ||1|| |
O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam, who keep the Lord clasped tightly to their hearts, are automatically satisfied. ||1|| |

|
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਗਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਆਇ ॥ |
manamukh har naam n saeviaa dhukh lagaa bahuthaa aae || |
The self-willed manmukh does not serve the Lord's Name, and so he suffers in horrible pain. |
|
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਹੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
anthar agiaan andhhaer hai sudhh n kaaee paae || |
He is filled with the darkness of ignorance, and he does not understand anything. |
|
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਬੀਜਿਓ ਭੁਖਾ ਕਿ ਅਗੈ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
manehath sehaj n beejiou bhukhaa k agai khaae || |
Because of his stubborn mind, he does not plant the seeds of intuitive peace; what will he eat in the world hereafter, to satisfy his hunger? |
|
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
naam nidhhaan visaariaa dhoojai lagaa jaae || |
He has forgotten the treasure of the Naam; he is caught in the love of duality. |
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
naanak guramukh milehi vaddiaaeeaa jae aapae mael milaae ||2|| |
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are honored with glory, when the Lord Himself unites them in His Union. ||2|| |

|
ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ॥ |
har rasanaa har jas gaavai kharee suhaavanee || |
The tongue which sings the Lord's Praises, is so very beautiful. |
|
ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਣੀ ॥ |
jo man than mukh har bolai saa har bhaavanee || |
One who speaks the Lord's Name, with mind, body and mouth, is pleasing to the Lord. |
|
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਖੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਣੀ ॥ |
jo guramukh chakhai saadh saa thripathaavanee || |
That Gurmukh tastes the the sublime taste of the Lord, and is satisfied. |
|
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ॥ |
gun gaavai piaarae nith gun gaae gunee samajhaavanee || |
She sings continually the Glorious Praises of her Beloved; singing His Glorious Praises, she is uplifted. |
|
ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਬੁਲਾਵਣੀ ॥੧੩॥ |
jis hovai aap dhaeiaal saa sathiguroo guroo bulaavanee ||13|| |
She is blessed with the Lord's Mercy, and she chants the Words of the Guru, the True Guru. ||13|| |

ਹਸਤੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਹਰਣਿ ਜਿਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ |
hasathee sir jio ankas hai aharan jio sir dhaee || |
The elephant offers its head to the reins, and the anvil offers itself to the hammer; |

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿ ਕੈ ਊਭੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |
man than aagai raakh kai oobhee saev karaee || |
just so, we offer our minds and bodies to our Guru; we stand before Him, and serve Him. |
