| ਕੋਈ ਪੜਤਾ ਸਹਸਾਕਿਰਤਾ ਕੋਈ ਪੜੈ ਪੁਰਾਨਾ ॥ |
| koee parrathaa sehasaakirathaa koee parrai puraanaa || |
| Some read the Sanskrit scriptures, and some read the Puraanas. |

| ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥ |
| koee naam japai japamaalee laagai thisai dhhiaanaa || |
| Some meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and chant it on their malas, focusing on it in meditation. |

| ਅਬ ਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ |
| ab hee kab hee kishhoo n jaanaa thaeraa eaeko naam pashhaanaa ||1|| |
| I know nothing, now or ever; I recognize only Your One Name, Lord. ||1|| |

| ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਵਨ ਗਤੇ ॥ |
| n jaanaa harae maeree kavan gathae || |
| I do not know, Lord, what my condition shall be. |
|
| ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਪਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| ham moorakh agiaan saran prabh thaeree kar kirapaa raakhahu maeree laaj pathae ||1|| rehaao || |
| I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Please, save my honor and my self-respect. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕਬਹੂ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਊਭਿ ਚੜਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥ |
| kabehoo jeearraa oobh charrath hai kabehoo jaae paeiaalae || |
| Sometimes, the soul soars high in the heavens, and sometimes it falls to the depths of the nether regions. |

| ਲੋਭੀ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੨॥ |
| lobhee jeearraa thhir n rehath hai chaarae kunddaa bhaalae ||2|| |
| The greedy soul does not remain stable; it searches in the four directions. ||2|| |

| ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਹਿ ਮਾਈ ॥ |
| maran likhaae manddal mehi aaeae jeevan saajehi maaee || |
| With death pre-ordained, the soul comes into the world, gathering the riches of life. |

| ਏਕਿ ਚਲੇ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਤੀ ਆਈ ॥੩॥ |
| eaek chalae ham dhaekheh suaamee bhaahi balanthee aaee ||3|| |
| I see that some have already gone, O my Lord and Master; the burning fire is coming closer! ||3|| |

| ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥ |
| n kisee kaa meeth n kisee kaa bhaaee naa kisai baap n maaee || |
| No one has any friend, and no one has any brother; no one has any father or mother. |

| ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥ |
| pranavath naanak jae thoo dhaevehi anthae hoe sakhaaee ||4||1|| |
| Prays Nanak, if You bless me with Your Name, it shall be my help and support in the end. ||4||1|| |

| sarab joth thaeree pasar rehee || |
| Your Light is prevailing everywhere. |
|
| ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਨਰਹਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
| jeh jeh dhaekhaa theh nareharee ||1|| |
| Wherever I look, there I see the Lord. ||1|| |
|
| ਜੀਵਨ ਤਲਬ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ |
| jeevan thalab nivaar suaamee || |
| Please rid me of the desire to live, O my Lord and Master. |

| ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਗਾਡਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਉਤਰਉ ਪਾਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| andhh koop maaeiaa man gaaddiaa kio kar outharo paar suaamee ||1|| rehaao || |
| My mind is entangled in the deep dark pit of Maya. How can I cross over, O Lord and Master? ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸਿਆ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| jeh bheethar ghatt bheethar basiaa baahar kaahae naahee || |
| He dwells deep within, inside the heart; how can He not be outside as well? |

| ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥ |
| thin kee saar karae nith saahib sadhaa chinth man maahee ||2|| |
| Our Lord and Master always takes care of us, and keeps us in His thoughts. ||2|| |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ |
| aapae naerrai aapae dhoor || |
| He Himself is near at hand, and He is far away. |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ |
| aapae sarab rehiaa bharapoor || |
| He Himself is all-pervading, permeating everywhere. |
|
| ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| sathagur milai andhhaeraa jaae || |
| Meeting the True Guru, the darkness is dispelled. |
