| The waves of greed are like packs of dogs. The poison of Maya sticks to the body-skeleton. ||7|| |

| Working for Maya is useless. |

| ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਭ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਵਲਾ ਕੰਤ ॥ |
| har aapae sabh ras bhogadhaa har aapae kavalaa kanth || |
| The Lord Himself enjoys all pleasures; the Lord Himself is the Husband of Maya. |

| ਜੋ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਚਰਨ ਨਿਤ ਕਉਲਾ ॥ |
| jo japadhae har har dhinas raath thin saevae charan nith koulaa || |
| Maya serves at the feet of those who chant and meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, day and night. |

| ਧਾਵਤੁ ਧਾਇ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਖ ਕੋਸਨ ਕਉ ਬਿਥਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੭॥ |
| dhhaavath dhhaae dhhaavehi preeth maaeiaa lakh kosan ko bithh dheejai ||7|| |
| They hurry and run, and wander all around, caught in the love of Maya; they cover hundreds of thousands of miles in their wanderings. ||7|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਲੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗ ਲਗੀਜੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu sabal hai bhaaree mohu kaalakh dhaag lageejai || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is very powerful; this attachment is a black stain which sticks. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਸਿਵ ਨੀਕੀ ਆਨਿ ਪਾਨੀ ਸਕਤਿ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥ |
| guramukh joth bhalee siv neekee aan paanee sakath bhareejai || |
| The Gurmukhs are blessed with the Divine Light of the Lord; Maya comes to serve them. |

| ਸਭੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੬॥ |
| sabh maaeiaa mohu bikham jag thareeai sehajae har ras peejai ||6|| |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is totally treacherous; drinking in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, you shall easily, intuitively cross over the world-ocean. ||6|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਚੈ ਪਚੀਜੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa maaeiaa kae jo adhhikaaee vich maaeiaa pachai pacheejai || |
| Those who are totally in love with Maya, Maya, shall rot away in Maya. |
|
| ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਬੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਉਚਰੇ ਸੰਕਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jai kaaran baedh brehamai oucharae sankar shhoddee maaeiaa || |
| For His sake, Brahma uttered the Vedas, and Shiva renounced Maya. |

| ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਧਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥ |
| man maaeiaa man dhhaaeiaa man pankhee aakaas || |
| The mind is Maya, the mind is a chaser; the mind is a bird flying across the sky. |

| ਦਿਨੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਘਟਾਈ ॥ |
| dhin dhin aavai thil thil shheejai maaeiaa mohu ghattaaee || |
| With the coming of each and every day, his life is wearing away, bit by bit; but still, his heart is attached to Maya. |

| ਸਾਕਤ ਕਉ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਅੰਧਾਰੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲ ॥ |
| saakath ko dhin rain andhhaaree mohi faathhae maaeiaa jaal || |
| Dark are the days and nights of the faithless cynics; they are caught in the trap of attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੋਹੈ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jis prasaadh mohai nehee maaeiaa || |
| By His Grace, they are not enticed by Maya; |
|
| ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਰੈ ॥ |
| naa man marai n maaeiaa marai || |
| Without subduing the mind, Maya cannot be subdued. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਚਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa sanch raajae ahankaaree || |
| Gathering the wealth of Maya, kings become proud and arrogant. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa saathh n chalai piaaree || |
| But this Maya that they love so much shall not go along with them in the end. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mamathaa hai bahu rangee || |
| There are so many colors and flavors of attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi sagal jag shhaaeiaa || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is spread out all over the world. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਣੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ |
| maaeiaa dhhandhhaa dhhaavanee dhuramath kaar bikaar || |
| Running around chasing the entanglements of Maya is an evil-minded act of corruption. |
|
| ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲ ਖੁਆਰ ॥ |
| manasaa maaeiaa mohanee manamukh bol khuaar || |
| The self-willed manmukh is enticed by his desires for Maya; his words are useless and empty. |
|
| ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥ |
| eis man maaeiaa mohi binaas || |
| This mind is ruined by its attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| bhagouthee mudhraa man mohiaa maaeiaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੋ ਸੰਗੁ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੂ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਲਾਗੁ ॥ |
| maaeiaa ko sang thiaag prabh joo kee saran laag || |
| Abandon your association with Maya, and take shelter in the Sanctuary of God. |

| ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਹ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਚੇਰੀ ॥੨॥੩॥ |
| simarath neh kio muraar maaeiaa jaa kee chaeree ||2||3|| |
| Why not meditate on the Lord? Even Maya is His slave. ||2||3|| |

| ਬਰਧੰਤਿ ਜਰੂਆ ਹਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| baradhhanth jarooaa hithyanth maaeiaa || |
| It grows old; its love for Maya increases greatly. |

| ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥ |
| ghattanth kanik maanik maaeiaa svaroopan || |
| Gold and jewels and the incomparable beauty of Maya fade away. |

| ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਪਿਤੰ ॥ |
| bachithr mandhir sobhanth basathraa eithyanth maaeiaa byaapithan || |
| wondrous mansions, decorations and clothes - this is how Maya clings to him. |
|
| ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤਹ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਨਬੰਧਨਹ ॥ |
| neh chinthaa banithaa suth meetheh pravirath maaeiaa sanabandhhaneh || |
| Do not worry about your spouse, children and friends. You are obsessed with your involvements in Maya. |
|
| ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਹੇਤੰ ਅਹੰ ਬੰਧੰ ਭਰਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲਨੰ ਬਿਕਾਰੰ ॥ |
| anithy haethan ahan bandhhan bharam maaeiaa malanan bikaaran || |
| The bonds of love, attachment, egotism, doubt, Maya and the pollution of corruption are temporary. |
|
| ਭਾਗ ਉਦਿਮ ਲਬਧ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਖਲ ਪੰਡਿਤਹ ॥੩੧॥ |
| bhaag oudhim labadhhyan maaeiaa naanak saadhhasang khal pandditheh ||31|| |
| By destiny and hard work, the wealth of Maya is obtained. O Nanak, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, even fools become religious scholars. ||31|| |

| ਭੋਜਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਅਲਪ ਮਾਯਾ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਰਹਤਹ ॥ |
| bhojanan gopaal keerathanan alap maayaa jal kamal rehatheh || |
| They take the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise as their food; they remain untouched by Maya, like the lotus in the water. |

| ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨੰ ਮਦੰ ਮਾਯਾ ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ ॥ |
| bharam mohan maan apamaanan madhan maayaa biaapithan || |
| doubt, emotional attachment, pride, dishonor and intoxication with Maya |

| ਮਿਤ੍ਰੰ ਤਜੰਤਿ ਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਮਾਯਾ ਬਿਸ੍ਤੀਰਨਹ ॥ |
| mithran thajanth sathran dhrirranth anik maayaa bistheeraneh || |
| You forsake friends, and hold tight to enemies. You spread out countless illusions of Maya. |

| ਲਉ ਲਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਤਿਪਤਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਏ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਸਿ ਸੂਕਰਹ ॥੬੬॥ |
| lo lee thrisanaa athipath man maaeae karam karath s sookareh ||66|| |
| His desire for this and that is not satisfied; his mind is caught in Maya, and he is acting like a pig. ||66|| |

| ਮਾਯਾ ਚਿਤ ਭਰਮੇਣ ਇਸਟ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੇਖੁ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥ |
| maayaa chith bharamaen eisatt mithraekh baandhhaveh || |
| The consciousness wanders lost in Maya, attached to friends and relatives. |

| ਕਬੀਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਡੋਲਨੀ ਪਵਨੁ ਝਕੋਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥ |
| kabeer maaeiaa ddolanee pavan jhakolanehaar || |
| Kabeer, Maya is the butter-churn, and the breath is the churning-stick. |

| ਕਬੀਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਡੋਲਨੀ ਪਵਨੁ ਵਹੈ ਹਿਵ ਧਾਰ ॥ |
| kabeer maaeiaa ddolanee pavan vehai hiv dhhaar || |
| Kabeer, Maya is the butter-churn; the breath flows like ice water. |

| ਕਬੀਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਚੋਰਟੀ ਮੁਸਿ ਮੁਸਿ ਲਾਵੈ ਹਾਟਿ ॥ |
| kabeer maaeiaa chorattee mus mus laavai haatt || |
| Kabeer, Maya is the thief, which breaks in and plunders the store. |
|
| ਕਬੀਰ ਚੁਗੈ ਚਿਤਾਰੈ ਭੀ ਚੁਗੈ ਚੁਗਿ ਚੁਗਿ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਬਚਰਹਿ ਕੂੰਜ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਰੇ ॥੧੨੩॥ |
| kabeer chugai chithaarai bhee chugai chug chug chithaarae || jaisae bacharehi koonj man maaeiaa mamathaa rae ||123|| |
| Kabeer, the flamingo pecks and feeds, and remembers her chicks. She pecks and pecks and feeds, and remembers them always. Her chicks are very dear to her, just like the love of wealth and Maya is dear to the mortal's mind. ||123|| |

| ਕਬੀਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਜੀ ਤ ਕਿਆ ਭਇਆ ਜਉ ਮਾਨੁ ਤਜਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥ |

| Kabeer, what good is it to give up Maya, if the mortal does not give up his pride? |

| ਨਾਮਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਕਹੈ ਤਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਮੀਤ ॥ |
| naamaa maaeiaa mohiaa kehai thilochan meeth || |
| Trilochan says, O Naam Dayv, Maya has enticed you, my friend. |

| ਜੋਬਨ ਰੂਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਚਰਤ ਬਿਕਲ ਬਡੌ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥ |
| joban roop maaeiaa madh maathaa bicharath bikal badda abhimaanee || |
| I am intoxicated with the wine of youth, beauty and the riches of Maya. I wander around perplexed, in excessive egotistical pride. |
|
| ਰੇ ਗੁਨ ਹੀਨ ਦੀਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਏਕ ਘਰੀ ॥ |
| rae gun heen dheen maaeiaa kiram simar suaamee eaek gharee || |
| You worthless, petty worm of Maya - remember your Lord and Master, at least for an instant! |
|
| ਸੰਪਤ ਦੋਲ ਝੋਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਝੂਲਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਘੁਘਨਾ ॥ |
| sanpath dhol jhol sang jhoolath maaeiaa magan bhramath ghughanaa || |
| You swing in the swing of wealth, intoxicated with Maya, and you wander around like an owl. |
|
| ਦੇਹ ਨ ਗੇਹ ਨ ਨੇਹ ਨ ਨੀਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਤ ਕਹਾ ਲਉ ਗਾਰਹੁ ॥ |
| dhaeh n gaeh n naeh n neethaa maaeiaa math kehaa lo gaarahu || |
| Neither body, nor house, nor love last forever. You are intoxicated with Maya; how long will you be proud of them? |

| ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸੰਜਮ ਸੁਚ ਨੇਮਾ ਚੰਚਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥ |
| karam dhharam sanjam such naemaa chanchal sang sagal bidhh haaree || |
| I gave up good deeds, righteousness and Dharma, self-discipline, purity, religious vows and all good ways; I associated with the fickle Maya. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨ ਚਲੇ ਸਭਿ ਡਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ |
| naanak santh charan sang oudhharae hor maaeiaa magan chalae sabh ddaaree ||6|| |
| O Nanak, I was saved in the Society of the Saints, at their feet; the others, intoxicated with Maya, have gone, leaving everything behind. ||6|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗ ਕਰਤ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਕੈ ਕੂਪਿ ਗੁਬਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa rang birang karath bhram moh kai koop gubaar pariou hai || |
| The pleasures of Maya shall fade away. In doubt, the mortal falls into the deep dark pit of emotional attachment. |

| ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਚਲ ਠਾਣ ਬਿਮਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਸੁਥਾਨ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਸੀਲ ਸਨਾਹੁ ਸਕਤਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ॥ |
| jaa kee dhrisatt achal thaan bimal budhh suthhaan pehir seel sanaahu sakath bidhaar || |
| Your Gaze is focused upon the unmoving, unchanging place. Your Intellect is immaculate; it is focused upon the most sublime place. Wearing the armor of humility, you have overcome Maya. |
