| grihi marree masaanee ban mehi basathae ooth thinaa kai laagee paleeaa ||4|| |
| Some dwell in homes, graveyards, cremation grounds and forests; but Maya still clings to them there. ||4|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa madh man than sang jaathaa || |
| His mind and body are permeated with the intoxication of Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਮਦਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਇਓ ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਗਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kae madh janam siraaeiou raam bhajan nehee laagiou ||1|| rehaao || |
| I have wasted my life intoxicated with Maya; I have not focused myself in meditation on the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਛਾਣੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਚੜਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ॥ |
| shhaanee khaak bibhooth charraaee maaeiaa kaa mag johai || |
| He sifts through the dust, and applies ashes to his body, but he is searching for the path of Maya's wealth. |

| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥ |
| anmrith shhodd mehaa bikh peevai maaeiaa kaa dhaevaanaa || |
| They abandon the Ambrosial Nectar, and drink the deadly poison, driven mad by Maya. |

| ਲਾਗੀ ਭੂਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਖਰੇ ॥੩॥ |
| laagee bhookh maaeiaa mag johai mukath padhaarathh mohi kharae ||3|| |
| Driven by hunger, it sees the path of Maya's riches; this emotional attachment takes away the treasure of liberation. ||3|| |
|
| ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੬॥ |
| anjan maahi niranjan jaathaa jin ko nadhar thumaaree jeeo ||6|| |
| In the midst of Maya, the Immaculate Lord is known, by those upon whom You bestow Your Grace. ||6|| |
|
| ਛੋਡਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਉ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| shhodd behai tho shhoottai naahee || |
| He may try to abandon Maya, but he is not released. |
|
| ਇਸ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਉਰੁ ਢਾਲੀਐ ॥੬॥ |
| eis hee mehi jis kee path raakhai this saadhhoo chour dtaaleeai ||6|| |
| I wave the fly-brush over that holy person, whose honor is protected in the midst of Maya. ||6|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mamathaa shhoddee n jaaee || |
| Love and attachment to Maya cannot be abandoned. |
|
| ਆਪੇ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ |
| aapae choj karae rang mehalee hor maaeiaa moh pasaaraa hae ||4|| |
| He Himself plays joyfully in the mansion of the body; all the rest is just attachment to Maya's expanse. ||4|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਰੋਇ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ |
| maaeiaa kaaran roe vigoochehi dhhrig jeevan sansaaraa hae ||8|| |
| They cry for the sake of Maya, and are ruined; their lives in this world are cursed. ||8|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu pasariaa paasaaraa || |
| The expansive expanse of the Universe is attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa bikh bhueiangam naalae || |
| They live with the poisonous snake of Maya. |
|
| ਸਾਕਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| saakath maaeiaa ko bahu dhhaavehi || |
| The faithless cynics chase after Maya. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ |
| sathigur sabadh rehehi rang raathaa thaj maaeiaa houmai bhraathaa hae ||6|| |
| Those who remain imbued with the Word of the True Guru's Shabad, renounce Maya, egotism and doubt. ||6|| |
|
| ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਖੀ ॥ |
| karam dhharam nehee maaeiaa maakhee || |
| There was no karma, no Dharma, no buzzing fly of Maya. |
|
| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ |
| brehamaa bisan mehaes oupaaeae maaeiaa mohu vadhhaaeidhaa ||14|| |
| He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14|| |
|
| ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸਾਜਿ ਮੇਖੁਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਖਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ |
| thribhavan saaj maekhulee maaeiaa aap oupaae khapaaeidhaa ||6|| |
| He fashioned the three worlds, and the rope of Maya; He Himself creates and destroys. ||6|| |
|
| ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ॥ |
| brehamae mukh maaeiaa hai thrai gun || |
| form the mouth of Brahma; they speak of the three gunas, the three qualities of Maya. |

| ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ॥ |
| eis man maaeiaa ko naehu ghanaeraa || |
| This mind is so in love with Maya. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਗਲਿ ਫੰਧੇ ॥ |
| houmai maaeiaa kae gal fandhhae || |
| The noose of egotism and Maya is around their necks. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu jagath gubaaraa || |
| The world is in the darkness of love and attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚੇ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| houmai maaeiaa vichae paaee || |
| Egotism was instilled into the illusion of Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅੰਧੁ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu andhh andhhaaraa || |
| Love and attachment to Maya are utter darkness. |
|
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ |
| anthar maaeiaa moh gubaaraa jio supanai sudhh n hoee hae ||11|| |
| The darkness of emotional attachment to Maya is within his inner being; as if in a dream, he does not understand. ||11|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| houmai maaeiaa mail kamaaeiaa || |
| Acting in egotism, they are stained with the filth of Maya. |
|
| ਇਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥ |
| eik maaeiaa mohi soe rehae abhaagae || |
| Some are attached to the love of Maya; these unfortunate ones remain asleep. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi dhukh maahi samaanee || |
| Immersed in love and attachment to Maya, it suffers in pain. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi sudhh n kaaee || |
| In love and attachment to Maya, he has no understanding at all. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੂਤੇ ॥ |
| manamukh houmai maaeiaa soothae || |
| The manmukhs are asleep in egotism and Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa lehar sabadh nivaaree || |
| The Word of the Shabad has subdued the waves of Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ |
| maaeiaa moh mail pathang n laagai guramathee har naam bheejai hae ||7|| |
| It is not stained at all by the dirt of attachment to Maya; through the Guru's Teachings, it is pleased and saturated with the Lord's Name. ||7|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa agan jalai sansaarae || |
| The world is burning in the fire of Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਲੂਝਹਿ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kaaran parr parr loojhehi || |
| For the sake of Maya, he reads and recites and argues. |
|
| ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਿਥੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| nij ghar vasiaa thithhai mohu n maaeiaa || |
| He dwells in His own home deep within the self, where there is no emotional attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu sabadh jalaaeiaa || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is burnt away by the Word of the Shabad. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਨਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu sabh aapae keenaa || |
| All by Himself, God created emotional attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਦੁਖ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa moh dhukh sabaaeiaa || |
| are trapped in emotional attachment to Maya; they totally suffer in pain. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ |
| bin gur dhukh sukh jaapai naahee maaeiaa moh dhukh bhaaree hae ||9|| |
| Without the Guru, they do not understand pain and pleasure; attached to Maya, they suffer in terrible pain. ||9|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu bahu chithai bikaaraa || |
| Attached to Maya, it dwells on its many sins. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi sabh jagath oupaaeiaa || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya wells up throughout the whole world, |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi har sio chith n laagai || |
| Emotionally attached to Maya, one's consciousness is not attached to the Lord. |

| ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| simrith saasathr bahuth bisathhaaraa || maaeiaa mohu pasariaa paasaaraa || |
| The great volumes of the Simritees and the Shaastras only extend the extension of attachment to Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਜੰਤ ਪਾਜੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi dhoojai janth paajae || |
| and attaches them to duality, attachment and Maya. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ |
| anadhin naam rathaa dhin raathee maaeiaa mohu chukaahaa hae ||8|| |
| Night and day, he remains imbued with the Naam, day and night; he is rid of emotional attachment to Maya. ||8|| |
|
| ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
| no nidhh naam vasiaa ghatt anthar shhoddiaa maaeiaa kaa laahaa hae ||2|| |
| The Naam, the embodiment of the nine treasures, abides within their hearts; they renounce the profit of Maya. ||2|| |
|
| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ |
| houmai maaeiaa bharam gavaaeae || |
| He rids himself of egotism, Maya and doubt. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu pasariaa paasaaraa || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya has expanded throughout its expanse. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi badhhaa jamakaalae || |
| Attached to Maya, he is bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death. |
