| I shall be released from this world, when I stop clinging to Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਕਾ ਤਿਹ ਤਜਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੩॥ |
| maaeiaa naam garabh jon kaa thih thaj dharasan paavo ||3|| |
| Maya is the name of the power which causes us to be born; renouncing it, we obtain the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||3|| |

| From that Primal Being, Maya was produced. |

| ਆਲਾ ਤੇ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਰਣਾ ॥੩॥੪॥ |
| aalaa thae nivaaranaa jam kaaranaa ||3||4|| |
| O Lord, please save me from Maya, the cause of death. ||3||4|| |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੂੜ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਥਾ ॥ |
| bin gur moorr bheae hai manamukh thae moh maaeiaa nith faathhaa || |
| Without the Guru, the self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant; they are forever entangled in emotional attachment to Maya. |

| ਤੇ ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਮੁਏ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਅੰਗ ਬਿਖੁ ਚਾਖਾ ॥੨॥ |
| thae oojharr bharam mueae gaavaaree maaeiaa bhuang bikh chaakhaa ||2|| |
| Those fools die, wandering in the wilderness, eating the poison of the snake, Maya. ||2|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਇਅੰਗ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਓ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਢਿਬਾ ॥੧॥ |
| maaeiaa bhueiang grasiou hai praanee gur bachanee bis har kaadtibaa ||1|| |
| Maya, the snake, has seized the mortal; through the Word of the Guru, the Lord neutralizes the venom. ||1|| |

| ਸਾਕਤ ਬੰਧ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਲਾਇ ਜਕੀੜਾ ॥ |
| saakath bandhh bheae hai maaeiaa bikh sanchehi laae jakeerraa || |
| The faithless cynics are bound and gagged in the chains of Maya; they are actively engaged, gathering in the poisonous wealth. |

| ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਾਲ ਕਨਿਕ ਲਾਲ ਹੀਰਾ ਮਨ ਰੰਜਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| mukath maal kanik laal heeraa man ranjan kee maaeiaa || |
| Pearl necklaces, gold, rubies and diamonds please the mind, but they are only Maya. |
|
| ਦੀਸਹਿ ਸਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਅਲੇਪਾ ਨਹ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਉਨ ਮਾਈ ॥ |
| dheesehi sabh sang rehehi alaepaa neh viaapai oun maaee || |
| He appears to keep company with everyone, but he remains detached, and Maya does not cling to him. |

| ਇਆ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਮਗਨੁ ਹੋਤ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੋਰਿ ॥੧॥ |
| eiaa ras mehi magan hoth kirapaa thae mehaa bikhiaa thae thor ||1|| |
| I am drenched with this sublime essence by His Grace, and the powerful hold of Maya's corruption has been broken. ||1|| |
|
| ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਸ ਮੀਠੇ ਇਹ ਨਹੀ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਧਰਣੀ ॥ |
| sukh sanpath maaeiaa ras meethae eih nehee man mehi dhharanee || |
| Comforts, riches and the sweet pleasures of Maya - do not implant these within your mind. |

| ਭੂਲਿਓ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਰਝਾਇਓ ॥ |
| bhooliou man maaeiaa ourajhaaeiou || |
| My mind is deluded, entangled in Maya. |
|
| ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਉ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਘੂਲੀਐ ॥ |
| moh magan bikaraal maaeiaa tho prasaadhee ghooleeai || |
| I am intoxicated by emotional attachment to Maya, the treacherous one; by Your Grace alone can I be saved. |

| ਕਰਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਰਟਿਆ ॥ |
| karathae paap anaek maaeiaa rang rattiaa || |
| People commit countless sins; they are dyed in the color of the love of Maya. |
|
| ਨਹ ਨੈਣ ਦੀਸੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਈਸੈ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਾਲਿਆ ॥ |
| neh nain dheesai bin bhajan eesai shhodd maaeiaa chaaliaa || |
| The eyes do not see, without vibrating and meditating on the Lord; he must leave behind the attractions of Maya, and depart. |

| ਕੁਟੰਬ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਣੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਨੇਕ ਉਦਮਹ ॥ |
| kuttanb jathan karanan maaeiaa anaek oudhameh || |
| For his family, he works very hard; for the sake of Maya, he makes countless efforts. |

| ਤਿਆਗੰਤ ਕਪਟ ਰੂਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਰੂਪ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧॥ |
| thiaaganth kapatt roop maaeiaa naanak aanandh roop saadhh sangameh ||1|| |
| He renounces the deceptive illusion of Maya, and joins the blissful form of the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1|| |

| ਰਚੰਤਿ ਮੂੜ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਪਨ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| rachanth moorr agiaan andhheh naanak supan manorathh maaeiaa ||1|| |
| - the foolish, ignorant and blind are engrossed in these things. O Nanak, desire for Maya is just a dream. ||1|| |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੀਆ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਧ੍ਰੋਹੁ ॥੨॥ |

| O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the beauty of Maya's illusion is fake. ||2|| |

| ਪੂਰਨ ਭਏ ਨ ਕਾਮ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |

| His works are not completed, because he is enticed by Maya. |

| ਅਢੁ ਨ ਲਹੰਦੜੋ ਮੁਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜੁਲਈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |

| But it is not worth even a shell, O Nanak; the riches of Maya will not go along with anyone. ||2|| |

| ਨਚ ਰਾਜ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਸਟੰ ਨਚ ਭੋਗ ਰਸ ਮਿਸਟੰ ਨਚ ਮਿਸਟੰ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| nach raaj sukh misattan nach bhog ras misattan nach misattan sukh maaeiaa || |
| Princely pleasures are not sweet; sensual enjoyments are not sweet; the pleasures of Maya are not sweet. |

| ਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jaa prabh bheae dhaeiaal n biaapai maaeiaa || |
| When God becomes merciful, Maya does not cling. |
|
| ਕਾਟਿ ਸਿਲਕ ਦੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਅਪ ਦਸੇ ॥ |
| kaatt silak dhukh maaeiaa kar leenae ap dhasae || |
| Cutting away the painful noose of Maya, He makes us His own slaves. |

| ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| man maaeiaa kai haathh bikaano ||1|| rehaao || |
| My mind has sold out, and is in Maya's hands. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨ ਸੁਆਦਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਓ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| maaeiaa magan suaadh lobh mohiou thin prabh aap bhulaaeiou || rehaao || |
| It is intoxicated by Maya, enticed by the taste of greed. God Himself has deluded it. ||Pause|| |

| ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਰਚਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਮਦ ਮਾਇਓ ॥੪॥ |
| panch dhooth rach sangath gosatt mathavaaro madh maaeiou ||4|| |
| He is entangled in the company and the advice of the five demons, intoxicated by the wine of Maya. ||4|| |

| ਧਾਇ ਧਾਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਨ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhhaae dhhaae kirapan sram keeno eikathr karee hai maaeiaa || |
| With great effort and exertion, the miser works to gather in the riches of Maya. |

| ਹਾਂ ਹਾਂ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਰੇ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਥੋਰੀ ॥ |
| haan haan lapattiou rae moorrhae kashhoo n thhoree || |
| Oh! Oh! You cling to Maya, you fool; this is not a trivial matter. |

| ਹੀਓ ਮਹਰਾਜ ਰੀ ਮਾਇਓ ॥ਡੀਹਰ ਨਿਆਈ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਾਕਿਓ ਰੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| heeou meharaaj ree maaeiou || ddeehar niaaee mohi faakiou rae || rehaao || |
| By the Will of my Lord God, Maya, like a witch, has swallowed my soul. ||Pause|| |

| ਧੰਧ ਬੰਧ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਟੇ ਬਿਸੂਰ ॥ |
| dhhandhh bandhh binasae maaeiaa kae saadhhoo sangath mittae bisoor || |
| The worldly affairs and entanglements of Maya disappear, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; all sorrows are taken away. |

| ਮਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਛਲੁ ॥ |

| O my mother, Maya is so misleading and deceptive. |
|
| ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨਿ ਛੁਟੀ ਨ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਈ ॥ |
| magan rehiou maaeiaa mai nis dhin shhuttee n man kee kaaee || |
| I remain intoxicated by Maya, night and day, and the filth of my mind will not depart. |

| ਧਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਪੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ |
| dhhan maaeiaa sanpai this dhaevo jin har meeth milaaeiou ||1|| |
| I offer my wealth, the riches of Maya and my property to that one who leads me to meet the Lord, my friend. ||1|| |

| ਲਬ ਲੋਭ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕੀ ਮਾਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ |
| lab lobh ahankaar kee maathee maaeiaa maahi samaanee || |
| She is intoxicated with greed, pride and egotism, and engrossed in Maya. |

| ਸਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥ |
| sabh mohu maaeiaa sareer har keeaa vich dhaehee maanukh bhagath karaaee || |
| The Lord has infused the love of Maya into all bodies; through this human body, there comes the opportunity to worship the Lord with devotion. |
|
| ਭਰਮ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥ |
| bharam lobh moh maaeiaa vikaar || |
| Doubt comes from greed, emotional attachment and the corruption of Maya. |
|
| ਅਤੀਤੁ ਸਦਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ |
| atheeth sadhaaeae maaeiaa kaa maathaa || |
| He says that he is unattached, but he is intoxicated with Maya. |

| What is the use of the glory of Maya? |

| Tastes and pleasures, conflicts and jealousy, and intoxication with Maya |

| ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਦੂਤਾ ਲਾਈ ॥੧॥ |
| mehaa mohanee dhoothaa laaee ||1|| |
| The great enticer Maya has led them down the path of sin. ||1|| |

| ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੁਤਰ ਮਾਈ ॥੩॥ |
| ghar vaas n dhaevai dhuthar maaee ||3|| |
| The terrible, treacherous Maya does not even allow them to dwell in their own home. ||3|| |

| ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਏਹੁ ਬਡਪਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥੧॥ |
| jal jaao eaehu baddapanaa maaeiaa lapattaaeae ||1|| |
| This worldly glory might just as well burn; it only traps the mortals in Maya. ||1|| |
|
| ਮਹਾ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ਜੈਸੇ ਪਵਨੁ ਝੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| mehaa dhuthar maaeiaa || jaisae pavan jhulaaeiaa ||1|| |
| Maya is very treacherous and difficult to pass through. It is like a violent wind-storm. ||1|| |
|
| ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬਿਲਲਾਤੇ ਤੇ ਭੀ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥ |
| saadhhik sidhh firehi bilalaathae thae bhee mohae maaee ||2|| |
| The seekers and Siddhas wander around bewailing; they too are enticed by Maya. ||2|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਕਾਟੈ ਸੰਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa moh bharam bho kaattai santh saran jo aavai || |
| Attachment to Maya, doubt and fear are eradicated, when one enters the Sanctuary of the Saints. |

| ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥ |
| bol n jaanai maaeiaa madh maathaa maranaa cheeth n aavai ||1|| |
| The mortal being does not know how to chant Your Name - he is intoxicated with the wine of Maya, and the thought of death does not even enter his mind. ||1|| |
