| The filth of Maya clings to them, and they become unfortunate fools - they do not love the Lord's Name. |

| In ignorance, I cling to the pleasures of woman and the joys of Maya. |

| ਕੂੜੇ ਲੁਭਾਇਆ ਧੋਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਅਮਿਤਿਆ ॥ |
| koorrae lubhaaeiaa dhhohu maaeiaa karehi paap amithiaa || |
| You desire that which is false; deceived by Maya, you commit innumerable sins. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਜੇਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa rang jaethae sae sang n jaahee || |
| The pleasures of Maya which are here, shall not go with you. |

| ਕਮਲਾ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੀਤਿ ਕਮਲਾ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੀਤਿ ਹੇ ਤੀਖਣ ਮਦ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ਹੇ ਅਵਧ ਅਕਾਰਥ ਜਾਤ ॥ |
| kamalaa bhram bheeth kamalaa bhram bheeth hae theekhan madh bipareeth hae avadhh akaarathh jaath || |
| Maya is the wall of doubt - Maya is the wall of doubt. It is such a powerful and destructive intoxicant; it corrupts and wastes away one's life. |

| ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਢਿ ਲਏ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ |
| eikanhaa bhaanai kadt leae eikanhaa maaeiaa vich nivaas || |
| Some, by the Pleasure of His Will, are lifted up out of Maya, while others are made to dwell within it. |

| ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ |
| ho vich maaeiaa ho vich shhaaeiaa || |
| In ego they love Maya, and in ego they are kept in darkness by it. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਫਾਸ ਬੰਧ ਨਹੀ ਫਾਰੈ ਅਰੁ ਮਨ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਨ ਲੂਕੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa faas bandhh nehee faarai ar man sunn n lookae || |
| The mortal does not break free from the bonds of the noose of Maya, and he does not seek the shelter of the profound, absolute Lord. |

| ਮੁਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ਹਉ ਖਰਾ ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ॥ |
| muee maeree maaee ho kharaa sukhaalaa || |
| Maya is dead, O mother, and I am very happy. |
|
| ਨਕਟੀ ਕੋ ਠਨਗਨੁ ਬਾਡਾ ਡੂੰ ॥ |
| nakattee ko thanagan baaddaa ddoon || |
| The bell of the shameless queen, Maya, rings in both worlds. |

| ਸਗਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਕਟੀ ਕਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਸਗਲ ਮਾਰਿ ਅਉਹੇਰੀ ॥ |
| sagal maahi nakattee kaa vaasaa sagal maar aouhaeree || |
| Within all dwells the noseless Maya, who kills all, and destroys them. |

| ਸਰਪਨੀ ਤੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਲੀਆ ॥ |
| sarapanee thae oopar nehee baleeaa || |
| No one is more powerful than the she-serpent Maya, |

| ਦਸ ਮਾਸ ਮਾਤਾ ਉਦਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| dhas maas maathaa oudhar raakhiaa bahur laagee maaeiaa ||1|| |
| For ten months He preserved you in your mother's womb, and then, after you were born, you became attached to Maya. ||1|| |

| ਸਾਸੁ ਕੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਸਸੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜੇਠ ਕੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਡਰਉ ਰੇ ॥ |
| saas kee dhukhee sasur kee piaaree jaeth kae naam ddaro rae || |
| I am bothered by my mother-in-law, Maya, and loved by my father-in-law, the Lord. I fear even the name of my husband's elder brother, Death. |

| ਝੂਠੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਮੈ ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥੩॥੨੫॥ |
| jhoothee maaeiaa sabh jag baadhhiaa mai raam ramath sukh paaeiaa ||3||3||25|| |
| The false Maya has bound the whole world, but I have obtained peace, chanting the Name of the Lord. ||3||3||25|| |

| I have burnt away sexual desire, anger and attachment to Maya, and the pitcher of my desires has burst. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਮੋਹਿਤ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ |
| maaeiaa chithr bachithr bimohith biralaa boojhai koee ||1|| |
| The marvellous image of Maya is so fascinating; how few understand this. ||1|| |

| He alone is liberated, who conquers his mind; Maya does not stick to him again. |

| kaam krodhh maaeiaa bikh mamathaa eih biaadhh thae haattae ||1|| |
| Sexual desirer, anger, the poison of Maya and egotism - they are rid of these afflictions. ||1|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਸਨਬੰਧ ਸੈਨ ਸਾਕ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kae sanabandhh sain saak kith hee kaam n aaeiaa || |
| Relatives, relations and family bound through Maya are of no avail. |

| ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੇ ॥ |
| har jap maaeiaa bandhhan thoottae || |
| Meditating on the Lord, the bonds of Maya are cut away. |
|
| ਮੁਨਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਗਿ ਕਹਾਵਤ ਸਭ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਬਸਿ ਅਪਨਹੀ ॥ |
| mun jogee saasathrag kehaavath sabh keenhae bas apanehee || |
| They call themselves silent sages, Yogis and scholars of the Shaastras, but Maya has has them all under her control. |

| ਬਲਵੰਤਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹੀ ਸਭ ਮਹੀ ॥ |

| The power of Maya is pervading everywhere. |

| I have seen the many pleasures of Maya, but none goes with them in the end. ||1|| |

| Overwhelming the realm of Brahma, the realm of Shiva and the realm of Indra, Maya has come running here. |

| ਬਿਸਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਗਨੀਅਹਿ ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਖਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ |
| bisarath prabh kaethae dhukh ganeeahi mehaa mohanee khaaeiou ||1|| |
| Forgetting God, you suffer awful pain beyond measure, and you are consumed by the Great Enticer, Maya. ||1|| |

| ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਬਹੁ ਸਘਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਾ ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗੁ ॥ |
| ahanbudhh bahu saghan maaeiaa mehaa dheeragh rog || |
| Intellectual egotism and great love for Maya are the most serious chronic diseases. |

| ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖਵੰਤੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲਾ ॥ |

| Listen, O seekers of Truth - Nanak begs you to renounce the traps of Maya. |

| He renounces sexual desire, anger, egotism, greed, attachment and Maya. |

| ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਨ ਛਾਇਆ ਨਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੰਦ ਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ |
| naa thadh maaeiaa magan n shhaaeiaa naa sooraj chandh n joth apaar || |
| There is no intoxication of Maya there, and no shadow, nor the infinite light of the sun or the moon. |

| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਸਕਤਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸਿਵ ਘਰਿ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| anadhin naachai sakath nivaarai siv ghar needh n hoee || |
| One who dances night and day, and banishes Shakti's Maya, enters the House of the Lord Shiva, where there is no sleep. |

| ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਸੂਤਾ ਨਾਚੈ ਟਾਪੈ ਅਵਰੋ ਗਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥ |
| sakathee ghar jagath soothaa naachai ttaapai avaro gaavai manamukh bhagath n hoee ||3|| |
| The world is asleep in Maya, the house of Shakti; it dances, jumps and sings in duality. The self-willed manmukh has no devotion. ||3|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਅਰਥਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਲੋਕ ਨਾਚੇ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kai arathh bahuth lok naachae ko viralaa thath beechaaree || |
| So many people dance for the sake of Maya; how rare are those who contemplate reality. |

| ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਓਹੁ ਮਲਭਖੁ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ॥ |
| nindhak nindhaa kar mal dhhovai ouhu malabhakh maaeiaadhhaaree || |
| By slandering, the slanderer washes the filth off others; he is an eater of filth, and a worshipper of Maya. |

| ਜਲਤ ਅਨਿਕ ਤਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦ ਮੰਤ ॥ |
| jalath anik tharang maaeiaa gur giaan har ridh manth || |
| The many waves of desire for Maya are burnt away, when the Guru's spiritual wisdom is enshrined in the heart, through the Guru's Mantra. |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae suthae kabehi n jaagehi maaeiaa moh piaar || |
| Asleep in the love of duality, they never wake up; they are in love with, and attached to Maya. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਓਨੁ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| maaeiaa kaa mool rachaaeioun thureeaa sukh paaeiaa ||2|| |
| He created the root of Maya, and the peace obtained in the fourth state of consciousness. ||2|| |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu agiaan hai bikham ath bhaaree || |
| Emotional attachment to Maya is spiritual darkness; it is very difficult and such a heavy load. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਏਕ ਚਸੇ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ |

| Maya is false capital; in an instant, its false covering falls off. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਈ ਨਾਗਨੀ ਜਗਤਿ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ |

| Maya is a serpent, clinging to the world. |
|
| ਹਉ ਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| ho thaa maaeiaa mohiaa fir fir aavaa jaae || |
| The soul answers, ""I am enticed by Maya, and so I come and go, again and again."" |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| manamukh agiaanee maaeiaa mohi viaapae thinh boojh n kaaee paae || |
| The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in the love of Maya; they have no understanding at all. |

| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਜਾਇ ਜਗੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੁਆਇ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae jaae jag parabodhhai bikh maaeiaa moh suaae || |
| In the love of duality, he goes to instruct the world, but he is engrossed in the poison of Maya and attachment to pleasure. |

| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੀਪਕਿ ਪਤੰਗ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thrai gun maaeiaa vaekh bhulae jio dhaekh dheepak pathang pachaaeiaa || |
| Beholding Maya with her three dispositions, he goes astray; he is like the moth, which sees the flame, and is consumed. |

| ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੁਲਿ ਭੁਲਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਦਿਖਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਕਿਹੁ ਆਣਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥ |

| The mistaken, deluded Pandits gaze upon Maya, and watch to see whether anyone has offered them something. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਰੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ |

| Emotional attachment to Maya, sexual desire, anger and egotism are demons. |
