| maaeiaa magan ahinis mag johai naam n laevai marai bikh khaaee || |
| Infatuated with Maya, night and day, he sees only the worldly path; he does not chant the Naam, and drinking poison, he dies. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੩॥ |
| maaeiaa mohith jin eihu ras khoeiaa jaa saakath dhuramath laagaa ||3|| |
| One who is lured by Maya loses this juice; that faithless cynic is tied to his evil-mindedness. ||3|| |

| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ |
| thrai gun maaeiaa bharam bhulaaeiaa houmai bandhhan kamaaeae || |
| The three-faced Maya had led them astray in doubt, and they are snared by the noose of egotism. |
|
| ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਨਬੰਧੇਹੀ ॥ |
| puthr kalathr lok grih banithaa maaeiaa sanabandhhaehee || |
| Children, spouses, men and women in one's household, are all bound by Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨੁ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੈ ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa moh magan andhhiaarai dhaevanehaar n jaanai || |
| Infatuated with the darkness of emotional attachment to Maya, he does not know the Lord, the Great Giver. |

| ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਲੋਭੀ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ॥ |
| karam n jaanaa dhharam n jaanaa lobhee maaeiaadhhaaree || |
| I do not know about karma and good deeds; I do not know about Dharma and righteous living. I am so greedy, chasing after Maya. |
|
| ਪਿਛੈ ਲਗਿ ਚਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| pishhai lag chalee maaeiaa || |
| The wealth of Maya follows in my footsteps, |
|
| ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਭਇਓ ਬਾਵਰੋ ਸੂਝਤ ਨਹ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥ |
| madh maaeiaa kai bhaeiou baavaro soojhath neh kashh giaanaa || |
| He has gone insane with the wine of Maya, and does not understand even a bit of spiritual wisdom. |

| ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਕਹਾ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ |
| thaisae hee eih sukh maaeiaa kae ourajhiou kehaa gavaar ||1|| |
| just so are the pleasures of Maya. Why are you entangled in them, you ignorant fool? ||1|| |
|
| ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ॥ |
| raam bhajan kee gath nehee jaanee maaeiaa haathh bikaanaa || |
| You do not know the Way of the Lord's meditation; you have sold yourself into Maya's hands. |

| ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਸਭੇ ਵੇਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
| eih maaeiaa jag mohanee bhaaee karam sabhae vaekaaree ||1|| |
| This Maya is the enticer of the world, O Siblings of Destiny; all such actions are corrupt. ||1|| |

| ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਾਗੋ ਸੂਤ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਬਾਧੋ ਮਾਇ ॥ |
| eihu jag thaago sooth ko bhaaee dheh dhis baadhho maae || |
| This world is like a thread of cotton, O Siblings of Destiny, which Maya has tied on all ten sides. |

| ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥ |

| The poisonous Maya has enticed the consciousness, O Siblings of Destiny; through clever tricks, one loses his honor. |

| praem padhaarathh naam hai bhaaee maaeiaa moh binaas || |
| The Love of the Name is the greatest treasure, O Siblings of Destiny; through it, emotional attachment to Maya is dispelled. |

| ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਸਰੀਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥ |

| When he emerges, he finds corruption pervading everywhere, O Beloved, and he becomes increasingly attached to Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਅਟਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਮੂਲਿ ॥ |
| maaeiaa laalach attiaa piaarae chith n aavehi mool || |
| He is filled with longing for Maya, O Beloved, and so the Lord does not ever come into his mind. |

| ਦੇਵਰ ਜੇਠ ਮੁਏ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਸੂ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ॥ |
| dhaevar jaeth mueae dhukh sasoo kaa ddar kis || |
| Her husband's younger and elder brothers, the corrupt desires, have died, suffering in pain; and now, who fears Maya, the mother-in-law? |
|
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥ |
| thrai gun aap sirajiaa maaeiaa mohu vadhhaaeiaa || |
| You Yourself created the three qualities, and fostered emotional attachment to Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਦੰਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mamathaa mohanee jin vin dhanthaa jag khaaeiaa || |
| The love of Maya is enticing; without teeth, it has eaten up the world. |
|
| ਏਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| eaehu maaeiaa rang kasunbh khin mehi lehi jaavanaa || |
| These pleasures of Maya are like the color of the safflower, which wears off in a moment. |
|
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥ |
| thrai gun maaeiaa mool hai vich houmai naam visaar || |
| The three qualities are the roots of Maya; in egotism, one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |

| ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੂਲੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ॥ |
| panddith bhoolae dhoojai laagae maaeiaa kai vaapaar || |
| The Pandits are deluded, attached to duality, and they deal only in Maya. |
|
| ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਅੰਤੇ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ॥ |
| dhhan sanpai maaeiaa sancheeai anthae dhukhadhaaee || |
| Gathering the wealth and property of Maya, brings only pain in the end. |

| ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕਰਹ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਣਹ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਵਲਾ ਕੰਤਾ ॥ |
| har keerathan kareh har jas suneh this kavalaa kanthaa || |
| I sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, and I listen to the Praises of the Lord, the Master of wealth and Maya. |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨੂਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ |
| manamukh maaeiaa mohi viaapae dhoojai bhaae manooaa thhir naahi || |
| The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their minds are unsteady. |
|
| ਝੂਠੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਇਆ ਜਿਉ ਨਲਨੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਸੂਆ ॥੪॥੨॥ |
| jhoothee maaeiaa aap bandhhaaeiaa jio nalanee bhram sooaa ||4||2|| |
| You have entangled yourself in the false wealth of Maya, like the parrot caught in the trap. ||4||2|| |

| ਕਹੀਅਤ ਆਨ ਅਚਰੀਅਤ ਅਨ ਕਛੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਪਰੈ ਅਪਰ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| keheeath aan achareeath an kashh samajh n parai apar maaeiaa || |
| We say one thing, and do something else; entangled in endless Maya, we do not understand anything. |
|
| ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥ |
| thaa thae bikhiaa mehi rehai oudhaas || |
| Then, in the midst of Maya, he remains detached. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਲੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi jalai abhimaan ||1|| |
| The egotistical people are burning in their attachment to Maya. ||1|| |

| ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥ |
| dhaekh kuttanb lobh mohiou praanee maaeiaa ko lapattaanaa || |
| Gazing upon his family, the mortal is enticed by greed; he clings in attachment to Maya. |

| ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਤੇ ਲੋਚਨ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੀ ॥੧॥ |
| lapatt rehae maaeiaa rang maathae lochan kashhoo n soojhee ||1|| |
| They remain engrossed in Maya, intoxicated with the pleasures of their wealth; their eyes see nothing else at all. ||1|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਭੂਲੋ ਅਵਰੈ ਹੀਤ ॥ |
| maaeiaa moh bhoolo avarai heeth || |
| Deluded by your emotional attachment to Maya, you love other things, |

| ਗੂਝੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਭਗਤ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ |
| goojhee bhaahi jalai sansaaraa bhagath n biaapai maaeiaa ||4|| |
| The world is being consumed by this hidden fire, but Maya does not cling to the Lord's devotees. ||4|| |

| ਸੁਰਗ ਮਿਰਤ ਪਇਆਲ ਭੂ ਮੰਡਲ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਮਾਇ ॥ |
| surag mirath paeiaal bhoo manddal sagal biaapae maae || |
| Paradise, the earth, the nether regions of the underworld, and the globe of the world - all are engrossed in Maya. |

| ਛਡਾਇ ਲੀਓ ਮਹਾ ਬਲੀ ਤੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਚਰਨ ਪਰਾਤਿ ॥ |
| shhaddaae leeou mehaa balee thae apanae charan paraath || |
| He has saved me from the awful power of Maya, by attaching me to His feet. |

| ਮਹਾ ਕਲੋਲ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ |
| mehaa kalol bujhehi maaeiaa kae kar kirapaa maerae dheen dhaeiaal || |
| Please shower Your Mercy upon me, and permit me to ignore the great enticements of Maya, O Lord, Merciful to the meek. |

| ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਰਿ ਅੰਧ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਬੰਧ ਅਨਿਕ ਦੋਖਾ ਤਨਿ ਛਾਦਿ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ |
| kaam krodhh kar andhh maaeiaa kae bandhh anik dhokhaa than shhaadh poorae || |
| He is blinded by sexual desire and anger, bound by Maya; his body and clothes are filled with countless sins. |

| ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਬਿਸਰੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਏਹੁ ਮਹਾਂਤ ਕਹੈ ॥ |
| raaj joban bisaranth har maaeiaa mehaa dhukh eaehu mehaanth kehai || |
| In power, youth and Maya, the Lord is forgotten; this is the greatest tragedy - so say the spiritual sages. |

| Is there any devotee, who is unattached to Maya, who may irrigate my mind with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the One Lord? ||3|| |

| manehath jo kamaavai thil n laekhai paavai bagul jio dhhiaan laavai maaeiaa rae dhhaaree || |
| One who acts through stubbornness is of no account at all; like a crane, he pretends to meditate, but he is still stuck in Maya. |

| ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਰਾਇ ਕਾਟੈ ਰੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਾਇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ |
| suprasann gopaal raae kaattai rae bandhhan maae gur kai sabadh maeraa man raathaa || |
| When the Lord, my King, is totally pleased with me, He will break the bonds of Maya for me; my mind is imbued with the Word of the Guru's Shabad. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਰੇਈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu jalaaeae preetham ras mehi rang karaeee || |
| She burns away her emotional attachment to Maya, and in love, she loves her Beloved. |

| ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥ |
| ahankaar houmai thajai maaeiaa sehaj naam samaaveae || |
| Egotism, self-conceit and Maya are forsaken, and he is intuitively absorbed into the Naam. |

| ਹਾਇ ਹਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥ |
| haae haae karae dhin raath maaeiaa dhukh mohiaa jeeo || |
| They cry and howl, day and night, caught by the pain of Maya. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਹਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਵਏ ॥ |
| maaeiaa dhukh mohiaa houmai rohiaa maeree maeree karath vihaaveae || |
| Caught by the pain of Maya, provoked by his ego, he passes his life crying out, ""Mine, mine!"". |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੋਹਿਆ ॥ |

| Without the Name, nothing shall go along with him; not his children, spouse or the enticements of Maya. |
