| Those who lack the Naam have their faces rubbed in the dirt of Maya. |

| ਗੁਣ ਵਿਹੂਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ |
| gun vihoon maaeiaa mal dhhaaree || |
| Those without virtue are stained by Maya's filth. |

| ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਤੰਗਾ ॥੩॥ |
| pach pach mueae bikh dhaekh pathangaa ||3|| |
| They burn away to death, chasing the poison of Maya, like the moth chasing the flame. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਸੂ ਤੇ ਪਿਰਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਵਾਖਿ ॥ |
| sasoo thae pir keenee vaakh || |
| I have been separated from my Beloved by Maya (my mother-in-law). |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਠਾ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa moothaa chaethai naahee || |
| Intoxicated by Maya, they do not think of the Lord. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi soe rehae abhaagae || |
| In the love of Maya, the unfortunate ones remain in sleep. |

| ਦੁਤਰ ਅੰਧ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhuthar andhh bikham eih maaeiaa || |
| This ocean of Maya is dark and treacherous. |

| ਜਨਮੁ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| janam brithhaa jaath rang maaeiaa kai ||1|| rehaao || |
| This human life is passing away in vain, in the love of Maya. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਡਾਕੀ ਕੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| ddaakee ko chith kashhoo n laagai charan kamal saranaae ||1|| |
| My consciousness is not affected by the witch, Maya; I take to the Sanctuary of the Lord's Lotus Feet. ||1|| |
|
| ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਤਸਰ ਏ ਖੇਲਤ ਸਭਿ ਜੂਐ ਹਾਰੇ ॥ |
| kaam krodhh maaeiaa madh mathasar eae khaelath sabh jooai haarae || |
| Sexual desire, anger, intoxication with Maya and jealousy - I have lost all of these in the game of chance. |

| ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਗਨ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ॥ |
| mehaa mohanee magan pria preeth praan || |
| The mortal is intoxicated with the great enticement of Maya, which is dearer to him than life. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ |
| maaeiaa kee kirath shhodd gavaaee bhagathee saar n jaanai || |
| He renounces the affairs of Maya, but he does not appreciate the value of devotional worship. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਛਲੀਆ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਬਿਖਲੀਆ ॥ |
| maaeiaa shhaleeaa bikaar bikhaleeaa || |
| Deluded by Maya, the mortal is led into sin and corruption. |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਰੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੬॥ |

| - O Nanak, such a servant crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4||5||56|| |

| If I ask the Pandits, I find them tainted by Maya. ||1|| |

| O Nanak, the Gurmukh crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4|| |

| ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ |
| this jan kehaa biaapai maaeiaa ||2|| |
| - how can Maya cling to him? ||2|| |
|
| ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਾਤੇ ॥ |
| soe rehae maaeiaa madh maathae || |
| The mortals are asleep, intoxicated with the wine of Maya. |

| ਗਿਰਤ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਖਾਹਿ ਮਿਠਾਈ ॥੧॥ |
| girath koop mehi khaahi mithaaee ||1|| |
| Falling into the well, the mortal eats the sweet treats of Maya. ||1|| |

| ਅਨਿਕ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਸਾਰਿੰਗਪਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| anik rang maaeiaa kae chithavath kabehoo n simarai saaringapaanee ||1|| rehaao || |
| Thinking of the many pleasures of Maya, the mortal never remembers the Lord, the Sustainer of the earth. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕਾਲ ਕੈ ਫਾਂਸਿ ਸਕਤ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਂਧਿਆ ॥੨॥ |
| kaal kai faans sakath sar saandhhiaa ||2|| |
| But the noose of death is around his neck, and Shakti, the power of Maya, has aimed her arrows at him. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਗ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਹਮ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ |
| jag mohanee ham thiaag gavaaee || |
| I have renounced and discarded Maya, the Enticer of the world. |
|
| ਕਉਲਾ ਬਪੁਰੀ ਸੰਤੀ ਛਲੀ ॥੩॥ |
| koulaa bapuree santhee shhalee ||3|| |
| The Saints have enticed Maya herself. ||3|| |
|
| ਐਸੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਕ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥ |
| aisee eisathree eik raam oupaaee || |
| Such is Maya, the woman, which the One Lord has created. |

| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭੋ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi sabho jag baadhhaa || |
| Attached to Maya, the whole world is in bondage. |
|
| ਜੇਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਤੇਤ ਪਛਾਵਿਆ ॥ |
| jaethae maaeiaa rang thaeth pashhaaviaa || |
| As many as are the pleasures of Maya, so many are the shadows they leave. |
|
| ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਪਟਾਏ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ॥ |
| mithhiaa sang sang lapattaaeae moh maaeiaa kar baadhhae || |
| : They are attached to falsehood; clinging to the transitory, they are trapped in emotional attachment to Maya. |

| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਰੀਐ ਰੇ ॥ |
| thrai gun maaeiaa breham kee keenhee kehahu kavan bidhh thareeai rae || |
| God has created Maya of the three qualities; tell me, how can it be crossed over? |

| ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਦਿ ਸੋਇਓ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| bikaar maaeiaa maadh soeiou soojh boojh n aavai || |
| He sleeps, intoxicated by corruption and Maya; he does not come to realize or understand. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu gur sabadh jalaaeae || |
| One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru's Shabad, |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi jag baadhhaa jamakaal || |
| Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਬਨ ਖੰਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ ॥ |
| ban khandd maaeiaa mohi hairaanaa || |
| It wanders around the forest, distracted by attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਤਿਪਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੫॥ |
| thipath naahee maaeiaa moh pasaaree ||5|| |
| They are not satisfied by attachment to the expanse of Maya. ||5|| |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਣੀ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohi dhoojai lobhaanee || |
| Attached to Maya, they are engrossed in duality. |
|
| ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| theen bhavan mehi eaekaa maaeiaa || |
| Throughout the three worlds, is the one Maya. |
|
| ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਜਾਦੀ ਬਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥ |
| eih maaeiaa kee sobhaa chaar dhihaarrae jaadhee bilam n hoe ||5|| |
| The glory of this Maya lasts for only a few days; it disappears in an instant. ||5|| |
|
| ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੪॥ |
| eihu jag maaeiaa mohi viaapiaa dhoojai bharam bhulaae ||4|| |
| This world is engrossed in attachment to Maya; it has gone astray in duality and doubt. ||4|| |
|
| ਮਰਣਾ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥ |
| maranaa manahu visaariaa maaeiaa mohu gubaar || |
| He has forgotten death, in the darkness of attachment to Maya. |
|
| ਜੇਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਰਸ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ |
| jaethae maaeiaa rang ras binas jaahi khin maahi || |
| There are so many pleasures and delights of Maya, but they pass away in an instant. |
|
| ਜਮ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੇ ਹੇਰੂ ਆਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਲਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੫॥ |
| jam raajae kae haeroo aaeae maaeiaa kai sangal bandhh laeiaa ||5|| |
| The hunters of the King of Death come, and bind him in the chains of Maya. ||5|| |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਭਰਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਭਲਾ ॥੨੦॥ |
| kiaa bharam kiaa maaeiaa keheeai jo this bhaavai soee bhalaa ||20|| |
| What is doubt? What is called Maya? Whatever pleases Him is good. ||20|| |
|
| ਲਲੈ ਲਾਇ ਧੰਧੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਕੀਆ ॥ |
| lalai laae dhhandhhai jin shhoddee meethaa maaeiaa mohu keeaa || |
| Lalla: He has assigned people to their tasks, and made the love of Maya seem sweet to them. |

| ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੭॥ |
| anthar aathamai breham n cheenihaaa maaeiaa kaa muhathaaj bhaeiaa ||7|| |
| Within your innermost self, you do not recognize God, and you compromise yourself for the sake of Maya. ||7|| |
|
| ਭਭੈ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੁਬੋਹੁ ਮੂੜੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਲਤਾਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| bhabhai bhavajal ddubohu moorrae maaeiaa vich galathaan bhaeiaa || |
| Bhabha: You have drowned in the terrifying world-ocean, you fool, and you have become engrossed in Maya. |

| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥ |
| houmai mamathaa maaeiaa sang n jaaee raam || |
| Egotism, worldly attachment, and the lures of Maya shall not go with you. |
|
| ਸਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਚਰਣ ਤਲੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ |
| saaeir kee puthree parehar thiaagee charan thalai veechaarae || |
| I have renounced Maya, the daughter of the ocean; reflecting upon reality, I have trampled it under my feet. |

| ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ |
| sansaar maaeiaa mohu meethaa anth bharam chukaaeiaa || |
| The love of Maya is sweet to the world, but in the end, this delusion is dispelled. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਭਵਾਹਿ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohanee mohiaa fir fir joonee bhavaahi || |
| The fascinating Maya has fascinated you, over and over again, and lured you into reincarnation. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਏ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥ |
| manamukhaa manamukh mueae maeree kar maaeiaa raam || |
| The self-willed manmukhs die in their self-willed stubbornness, declaring that the wealth of Maya is theirs. |

| ਤਿਨ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ |
| thin antharae mohu viaapai khin khin maaeiaa laagee raam || |
| Within, they are engrossed in emotional attachment; each and every moment, Maya clings to them. |
