| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥ |
| guramukh dhukh kadhae n lagai sareer || |
| The Gurmukhs never suffer bodily pain. |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਪੀਰ ॥ |
| guramukh houmai chookai peer || |
| The Gurmukhs have the pain of egotism taken away. |

| ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ |
| thoon aapae dhukh sukh dhaevehi karathae guramukh har dhaekhaavaniaa ||2|| |
| You Yourself bestow pain and pleasure, O Creator. The Lord reveals Himself to the Gurmukh. ||2|| |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae mehaa dhukh paavehi || |
| But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain. |
|
| ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ |
| thrai gun parrehi har eaek n jaanehi bin boojhae dhukh paavaniaa ||7|| |
| They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7|| |
|
| ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ |
| kaam krodhh pasariaa sansaarae aae jaae dhukh paavaniaa ||2|| |
| Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ |
| manamukh naam chith n aavai bin naavai bahu dhukh paavaniaa ||7|| |
| The self-willed manmukhs do not remember the Naam. Without the Naam, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7|| |
|
| ਕਉਣੁ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਸਹਤਾ ॥ |
| koun oupadhaes jith dhukh sukh sam sehathaa || |
| What are those teachings, by which we may endure pain and pleasure alike? |

| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਸਹਤਾ ॥ |
| guramukh oupadhaes dhukh sukh sam sehathaa || |
| Through the Guru's Teachings, we can endure pain and pleasure alike. |

| ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕਿਤੜਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਣਾ ॥ |
| so prabh chith n aavee kitharraa dhukh ganaa || |
| Those who do not remember God-how much pain must they suffer! |
|
| ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਕਿਉ ਰੋਵੰਨਿ ॥ |
| aapan leeaa jae milai vishhurr kio rovann || |
| If people could meet the Lord by their own efforts, why would they be crying out in the pain of separation? |

| ਹਥ ਮਰੋੜੈ ਤਨੁ ਕਪੇ ਸਿਆਹਹੁ ਹੋਆ ਸੇਤੁ ॥ |
| hathh marorrai than kapae siaahahu hoaa saeth || |
| She wrings her hands, her body writhes in pain, and she turns from black to white. |
|
| ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਬਿਓਗ ॥ |
| vaddabhaagee maeraa prabh milai thaan outharehi sabh bioug || |
| By great good fortune, I meet my God, and then all pain of separation departs. |
|
| ਤਿਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੇ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਪੜੀਆਹ ॥ |
| thin dhukh n kabehoo outharai sae jam kai vas parreeaah || |
| Their pain never departs, and they fall into the grip of the Messenger of Death. |
|
| ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਈ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਾਲੇ ॥ |
| vasath paraaee apunee kar jaanai houmai vich dhukh ghaalae || |
| They see other people's property as their own, and in egotism, they suffer in pain. |
|
| ਮੂਰਖੁ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗੁ ਦੁਖ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥ |
| moorakh bhogae bhog dhukh sabaaeiaa || |
| The fools enjoy their pleasures; they must also endure all their pains. |
|
| ਜੇ ਦੇਹੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਪਾਪ ਗਰਹ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥ |
| jae dhaehai dhukh laaeeai paap gareh dhue raahu || |
| If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars; |
|
| ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਈ ॥ |
| vich houmai kar dhukh roee || |
| In egotism, they cry out in pain. |
|
| ਬੋਲਣੁ ਫਾਦਲੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ |
| bolan faadhal naanakaa dhukh sukh khasamai paas ||1|| |
| Speech is vain and useless. O Nanak, pain and pleasure are in the power of our Lord and Master. ||1|| |
|
| ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥ |
| sagalae dhookh paanee kar peevaa dhharathee haak chalaaee || |
| and if I were to drink in all pain like water, and drive the entire earth before me; |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਝਖਣਾ ਦੁਖ ਛਡਿ ਮੰਗੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥ |
| naanak bolan jhakhanaa dhukh shhadd mangeeahi sukh || |
| O Nanak, it is absurd to ask to be spared from pain by begging for comfort. |
|
| ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਦਰਿ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਮਨੁਖ ॥ |
| sukh dhukh dhue dhar kaparrae pehirehi jaae manukh || |
| Pleasure and pain are the two garments given, to be worn in the Court of the Lord. |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥ |
| sathigur hoe dhaeiaal thaa dhukh n jaaneeai || |
| When the True Guru is merciful, you will know no pain. |
|
| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਰੇ ॥ |
| manamukh karehi thaethaa dhukh laagai guramukh milai vaddaaee rae || |
| As the self-willed manmukhs act, they suffer in pain. The Gurmukh obtains honor and greatness. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| bin naavai bahuthaa dhukh paaee || |
| Without the Name, they suffer in terrible pain. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| bin naavai dhukheeaa chaliaa roe ||2|| |
| Without the Name, the miserable ones depart crying out in pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਨਚਿ ਨਚਿ ਟਪਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| nach nach ttapehi bahuth dhukh paavehi || |
| they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain. |
|
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਮ ਪੀਰ ॥ |
| anthar vasai n laagai jam peer || |
| He dwells deep within - the pain of death does not touch Him. |
|
| ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| mehaa dhukh khattae birathhaa janam gavaaeiaa ||3|| |
| It earns only terrible pain, and this life is lost in vain. ||3|| |
|
| ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤਿਆਗੈ ॥ |
| milai piaarae sabh dhukh thiaagai || |
| Meeting her Beloved, all her pains are left behind. |
|
| ਹੋਰੁ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਏ ਅਨੰਤ ਤਰੰਗੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| hor vanaj karehi vaapaareeeae ananth tharangee dhukh maaeiaa || |
| Those traders who trade in other merchandise, are caught up in the endless waves of the pain of Maya. |
|
| ਤੁਮ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਰਬ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਇਕ ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਦੇ ਕਾਨੇ ॥ |
| thum dhaeiaal sarab dhukh bhanjan eik bino sunahu dhae kaanae || |
| You are Merciful, the Destroyer of all pain. Please give me Your Ear and listen to my prayer. |

| ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ ਚੁਭੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
| jio jio chalehi chubhai dhukh paavehi jamakaal sehehi sir ddanddaa hae ||2|| |
| The more they walk away, the deeper it sticks into them, and the more they suffer in pain, until finally, the Messenger of Death smashes his club against their heads. ||2|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭਵ ਖੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥ |
| har jan har har naam samaanae dhukh janam maran bhav khanddaa hae || |
| The humble servants of the Lord are absorbed in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. The pain of birth and the fear of death are eradicated. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਸਭ ਦਾਲਦ ਦੁਖ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥ |
| har har naam paragaasiaa maerae govindhaa sabh dhaaladh dhukh lehi jaahee jeeo || |
| He has revealed the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my Lord of the Universe; all poverty and pain have departed. |
|
| ਹਉ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਈਆ ਜੀਉ ॥ |
| ho rehi n sako bin dhaekhae maerae preetham mai anthar birahu har laaeeaa jeeo || |
| I cannot survive without seeing my Beloved; deep within, I feel the pain of separation from the Lord. |
|
| ਮੈ ਵੇਦਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਲਗਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥ |
| mai vaedhan praem har birahu lagaaee jeeo || |
| I am consumed with the pain of separation from the Love of the Lord. |
|
| ਅਗਨਿ ਸੀਤ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਸਿ ਦੂਖ ॥ |
| agan seeth kaa laahas dhookh || |
| like fire which takes away the pain of cold |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਸੈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੭੯॥ |
| dhookh dharadh thih naanak nasai ||4||10||79|| |
| - O Nanak, his pains and sorrows are eliminated. ||4||10||79|| |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਦੇਖਉ ਬਿਲਲਾਤੇ ॥ |
| bin har bhajan dhaekho bilalaathae || |
| Without meditating and vibrating on the Lord, they are crying out in pain. |
|
| ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਦੁਹਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤੇ ॥ |
| harakh sog dhuhehoon thae mukathae || |
| They are free of both pleasure and pain. |
|
| ਬਿਆਪਤ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥ |
| biaapath harakh sog bisathhaar || |
| It torments us with the expression of pleasure and pain. |
|
| ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਗਲ ਦੁਖ ਮਿਟੇ ॥ |
| santh prasaadh sagal dhukh mittae || |
| By the Grace of the Saints, all pains are erased. |
|
| ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ॥ |
| dhookh dharadh binasae bhai bharam || |
| My pains, sufferings, fears and doubts have been erased. |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਕਛੁ ਭਉ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥ |
| dhookh rog kashh bho n biaapai || |
| Pain, disease and fear do not affect them at all. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਏ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| prabh chith aaeae sabh dhukh jaae || |
| When God comes to mind, all pains depart. |
|
| ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਮਾਨੈ ॥੩॥ |
| this naaree ko dhukh n jamaanai ||3|| |
| that woman shall not suffer pain at the hands of the Messenger of Death. ||3|| |

| ਦੂਖੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਬ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ |
| dhookh rog sog bisarai jab naam || |
| Pain, disease and sorrow come when one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhookh dharadh bhram thaa kaa bhaagee ||1|| rehaao || |
| - pain, suffering and doubt run away from them. ||1||Pause|| |
