| tortured by the pain of egotism and Maya. |

| ਭਉਜਲ ਡੂਬਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ |
| bhoujal ddoobath chinth karaee || |
| They are drowning in the terrifying world-ocean, crying out in pain. |

| ਕੀ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ |
| kee visarehi dhukh bahuthaa laagai || |
| How could I ever forget You? It would be so painful! |
|
| ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhukh laagai thoon visar naahee ||1|| rehaao || |
| I would suffer such pain - no, I shall not forget You! ||1||Pause|| |

| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਰਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੪॥ |
| dhukh sukh bhaanaa thaeraa hovai vin naavai jeeo rehai naahee ||4|| |
| Pain and pleasure come by Your Will; without the Name, the soul does not even exist. ||4|| |

| ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥ |
| kaachee gaagar dhaeh dhuhaelee oupajai binasai dhukh paaee || |
| The clay pitcher of the body is miserable; it suffers in pain through birth and death. |

| ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਏ ॥ |
| dhaevathiaa dharasan kai thaaee dhookh bhookh theerathh keeeae || |
| The Gods yearning for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines. |

| ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥ |
| dhukheeeae dharadhavandh dhar thaerai naam rathae dharavaes bheae ||3|| |
| Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3|| |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਪੀਰ ॥ |
| guramukh thaa ko lagai n peer || |
| The Gurmukh is not afflicted by pain. |
|
| ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥ |
| vin naavai dhukh dharadh sareer || |
| Without the Name, the body suffers in pain; |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਤਾ ਉਤਰੈ ਪੀਰ ॥ |
| sathigur bhaettae thaa outharai peer || |
| but when one meets the True Guru, then that pain is removed. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ |
| bin gur bhaettae dhukh kamaae || |
| Without meeting the Guru, the mortal earns only pain. |
|
| ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਥਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| thin kaa janam maran dhukh laathhaa thae har dharageh milae subhaae ||1|| rehaao || |
| - their pains of birth and death are taken away. They are automatically ushered into the Court of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae lagae dhukh paaeiaa || |
| Attached to the love of duality, one only incurs pain. |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਜਲੈ ਸਬਾਈ ॥ |
| naam bihoonee dhukh jalai sabaaee || |
| Without the Naam, all are burning in pain. |
|
| ਸੋਗੁ ਹਰਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| sog harakh dhue sam kar jaanai gur parasaadhee sabadh oudhharai ||1|| rehaao || |
| He looks upon pleasure and pain alike; by Guru's Grace, he is saved through the Word of the Shabad. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥੧॥ |
| manamukh runnae apanee path khoe ||1|| |
| The self-willed manmukhs lose their honor, and cry out in pain. ||1|| |
|
| ਜਹਾਂ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਹਾਂ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਏ ॥ |
| jehaan sabadh vasai thehaan dhukh jaaeae || |
| Pain departs, from that place where the Shabad abides. |
|
| ਸਭ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਏ ਦੁਖੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥੩॥ |
| sabh nihafal karam keeeae dhukh dhhandhhaa ||3|| |
| All his actions are fruitless; they lead only to painful entanglements. ||3|| |
|
| ਸਤ ਕੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| sath kai khattiai dhukh nehee paaeiaa || |
| I have earned Truth, and I shall have no pain. |
|
| ਕੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮੇਰੋ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੋਹਿਓ ॥ |
| kanth miliou maero sabh dhukh johiou || |
| my Husband Lord has met me, and He sees all my pains. |
|
| ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਭਏ ਗਤੁ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥ |
| dhookh rog bheae gath than thae man niramal har har gun gaae || |
| Pain and disease have left my body, and my mind has become pure; I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. |

| ਦੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਿਮਰੀ ਤਹ ਮਉਜੂਦੁ ਜਮੁ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਹਾ ਡਰਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhukh sukh simaree theh moujoodh jam bapuraa mo ko kehaa ddaraaee ||1|| rehaao || |
| In pain and pleasure, whenever I remember Him, He is present. How can the poor Messenger of Death frighten me now? ||1||Pause|| |

| ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਮਿਟੈ ਤੇਰੋ ਸਹਸਾ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਖਮਨਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhookh bhookh mittai thaero sehasaa sukh paavehi thoon sukhaman naaree ||1|| rehaao || |
| Your pain, hunger and doubt shall vanish, and you shall obtain peace, O happy soul-bride. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਗੁਨ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਿਤਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਇ ॥੨॥੩੧॥ |
| gun nidhhaan nith gaavai naanak sehasaa dhukh mittaae ||2||31|| |
| Nanak ever sings the Praises of the Lord, the treasure of excellence; his doubts and pains are eliminated. ||2||31|| |

| ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਸਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ |
| sukh paaeae dhukh binasiaa thhaao ||1|| |
| I have found peace, and the seat of pain has been removed. ||1|| |

| ਪੀੜ ਗਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| peerr gee fir nehee dhuhaelee ||1|| rehaao || |
| her pain is dispelled, and she shall not become sad again. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੁਨੈ ਪੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ਸਰਧਾ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਗੈ ॥ |
| jo jo sunai paekhai laae saradhhaa thaa kaa janam maran dhukh bhaagai || |
| Whoever listens to, and beholds the Guru with faith, shall see his pains of birth and death taken away. |

| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਤਾਪੁ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਬੈਰੁ ਗੀਓ ॥੩॥ |
| kar kirapaa mohi sathigur dheenaa thaap santhaap maeraa bair geeou ||3|| |
| Showing His Mercy, the True Guru has given it to me, and my fever and pain and hatred are annulled. ||3|| |

| ਮਿਲਉ ਪਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਹਰਉ ਰੇ ॥ |
| milo pareetham suaamee apunae sagalae dhookh haro rae || |
| Meeting with my Beloved Lord aand Master, all my pains are taken away. |

| ਮਹਾ ਉਦਿਆਨ ਪਾਵਕ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਏ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਨਾ ॥ |
| mehaa oudhiaan paavak saagar bheae harakh sog mehi basanaa || |
| This world is a great wilderness, an ocean of fire, in which mortals abide, in pleasure and pain. |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਘਨੋ ਜਬ ਹੋਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ |
| dhookh ghano jab hothae dhoor || |
| I suffered in pain, when I thought He was far away; |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਦੂਖਾ ॥੧॥ |
| har simarath sagal binaasae dhookhaa ||1|| |
| Remembering the Lord in meditation, all pains are erased. ||1|| |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਢਹੈ ਦੁਖ ਡੇਰਾ ॥੨॥ |
| har har japath dtehai dhukh ddaeraa ||2|| |
| Meditating on the Lord, Har, Har, the house of pain is demolished. ||2|| |
|
| ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਦੁਖ ਦਰਦ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ |
| kilabikh binaasae dhukh dharadh dhoor || |
| My sins have been erased, and my sufferings and pains are gone. |
|
| ਗੁਰੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| gur kirapaal hoe dhukh jaae ||2|| |
| When the Guru shows His Mercy, pain is destroyed. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੨॥ |
| janam maran kaa dhookh nivaarai ||2|| |
| is freed of the pains of birth and death. ||2|| |
|
| ਅਨਿਕ ਦੂਖ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਅਵਰਾ ਕਉ ॥ |
| anik dhookh dhaevehi avaraa ko || |
| Death gives so much pain to others, |
|
| ਨਾ ਓਸੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਦੂਖੇ ॥੧॥ |
| naa ous dhookh n ham ko dhookhae ||1|| |
| He is not in pain, so I do not suffer. ||1|| |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| prabh kee preeth dhukh lagai n koe || |
| In the Love of God, one is not touched by pain. |
|
| ਸਰਬ ਦੂਖ ਜਬ ਬਿਸਰਹਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ |
| sarab dhookh jab bisarehi suaamee || |
| Everything is painful, when one forgets the Lord Master. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਝੂਰਨ ॥ |
| prabh kae saevak dhookh n jhooran || |
| God's servants never suffer pain. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਤਨ ਕਾ ਦੂਖ ॥ |
| prathhamae mittiaa than kaa dhookh || |
| First, the pains of the body vanish; |
|
| ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਾਇ ਮੈਡਾ ਹਭੁ ਨਸੈ ॥੧॥ |
| dhookh dharadh rog maae maiddaa habh nasai ||1|| |
| then all my pains, troubles, and diseases vanish. ||1|| |
|
| ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨੜਿਆ ਸੇ ਮਰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਵਿਸੂਰਿ ਵਿਸੂਰਿ ॥੨॥ |
| naam bihoonarriaa sae maranih visoor visoor ||2|| |
| Those who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall die, engulfed in sorrow and pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਮੇਟਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| sukh paaeiaa jan parasaadh dhukh sabh maettiaa ||1|| rehaao || |
| Peace is obtained, by the favor of the Lord's humble servant; all pains are taken away. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਲ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥ |
| janam maran dhukh kaal simarath mitt jaavee || |
| The pains of birth, death and reincarnation are erased by meditating on the Lord. |

| O Nanak, the Supreme Lord God preserves him, and no pain or sorrow afflicts him any longer. ||4||18||120|| |

| ਜਉ ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤਉ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਲਾਧੇ ॥ |
| jo bhaeiou kirapaal dheen dhukh bhanjan tho gur mil sabh sukh laadhhae || |
| When the Destroyer of the pains of the poor becomes merciful, then, as Gurmukh, you shall find absolute peace. |
