| ਨਿਮਖ ਕਾਮ ਸੁਆਦ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਦਿਨਸ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ |
| nimakh kaam suaadh kaaran kott dhinas dhukh paavehi || |
| For a moment of sexual pleasure, you shall suffer in pain for millions of days. |

| ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਿ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗ ॥ |
| ddol ddol mehaa dhukh paaeiaa binaa saadhhoo sang || |
| He wavers and falters, and suffers such great pain, without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. |
|
| ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨੀ ਆਈਐ ਸਰਬ ਫਲ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੨॥ |
| prabh saranee aaeeai sarab fal paaeeai sagalae dhukh jaahee ||2|| |
| Entering God's Sanctuary, all rewards are obtained, and all pains are taken away. ||2|| |
|
| ਲੋਭ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਖੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਹਿਰਿ ਵਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਦੁਖਾਹੀ ॥ |
| lobh bikhiaa bikhai laagae hir vith chith dhukhaahee || |
| Those who are attached to the poison of greed and sin grab at the wealth of others; they only bring pain on themselves. |

| ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਅਨੰਦੀ ਖੇਲੁ ਰੀ ਦਿਖਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| harakh sog bairaag anandhee khael ree dhikhaaeiou ||1|| rehaao || |
| Pleasure and pain, detachment and ecstasy - the Lord has revealed His Play. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਾਂ ॥ |
| this nikatt n kadhae dhukh haan || |
| pain never draws near him. |
|
| ਬਿਆਪੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਾਂ ॥ |
| biaapai dhukh n koe haan || |
| one shall not be afflicted with pain. |

| ਸੁਖ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਤ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਤ ਜਨ ਜਨ ਕੀ ॥ |
| sukh kai haeth bahuth dhukh paavath saev karath jan jan kee || |
| For the sake of pleasure, you suffer such great pain, and you have to serve each and every person. |
|
| ਸਚੁ ਬ੍ਰਤੁ ਨੇਮੁ ਨ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥ |
| sach brath naem n kaal santhaavai || |
| One who makes Truthfulness his fast and religious vows, does not suffer the pain of death. |
|
| ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੂਖ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ |
| sabh dhukh thaerae sookh rajaaee || |
| All pain and pleasure come by Your Will. |
|
| ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਈ ॥੬॥ |
| sabh dhukh maettae saachai naaee ||6|| |
| All pain is eradicated by the True Name. ||6|| |
|
| ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| mooeae ko rovai dhukh koe || |
| Who weeps over the pain of the dead? |
|
| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਚੀਤ ॥ |
| dhukh sukh parehar sehaj sucheeth || |
| Disregarding pain and pleasure, center your consciousness on the Lord. |
|
| ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥ |
| saachaa harakh naahee this sog || |
| He enjoys true pleasure, and suffers no pain. |
|
| ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਸੁ ਪੀਰਾ ॥ |
| lab lobh ahankaar s peeraa || |
| greed and egotism lead only to pain. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥ |
| bin samajhae jam kaa dhukh sehasee || |
| Without understanding, it shall suffer the pains of death. |
|
| ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਉ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| sukh dhukh sam kar naam n shhoddo aapae bakhas milaavanehaaraa ||1|| rehaao || |
| I look upon pleasure and pain alike; I shall not forsake the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord Himself forgives me, and blends me with Himself. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ |
| rog mittae dhukh thaak rehaaeiaa ||3|| |
| My diseases are cured, and my pains are taken away. ||3|| |
|
| ਨਾ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਦੂਖੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ |
| naa jamadhooth dhookh this laagai || |
| The Messenger of Death cannot touch him with pain; |

| ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ |
| dhookh mittai sach sabadh pashhaanai ||1|| |
| His pains are erased, and he realizes the True Word of the Shabad. ||1|| |

| ਜਿਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪਟੀਆ ਮਾਂਗੀ ਪਾਇ ਸੰਧੂਰੁ ॥ |
| jin sir sohan patteeaa maangee paae sandhhoor || |
| Those heads adorned with braided hair, with their parts painted with vermillion |

| ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਏਹੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥ |
| eikanhaa eaeho likhiaa behi behi rovehi dhukh || |
| For some, it is pre-ordained that they shall sit and cry out in pain. |
|
| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥ |
| dhukh sukh thaerai bhaanai hovai kis thhai jaae rooaaeeai || |
| Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry? |

| ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| laalach shhoddahu andhhiho laalach dhukh bhaaree || |
| So renounce greed - you are blind! Greed only brings pain. |

| ਦਰਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਰਵਾਨੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹੀ ॥ |
| dhar saevak dharavaan dharadh thoon jaanehee || |
| I am Your servant, the gate-keeper at Your Gate; You alone know my pain. |

| ਭਗਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੈਰਾਨੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੀ ॥੩॥ |
| bhagath thaeree hairaan dharadh gavaavehee ||3|| |
| How wonderful is Your devotional worship! It removes all pains. ||3|| |
|
| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੋਈ ॥੧॥ |
| janam maran kaa dhukh ghano nith sehasaa dhoee ||1|| |
| The pain of birth and death is so great, in constant skepticism and duality. ||1|| |
|
| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥ |
| janam maran dhukh maettiaa jap naam muraarae || |
| The pain of birth and death is removed, by chanting and meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |

| ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥ |
| bahu karam kamaavai dhukh sabaaeiaa || |
| He performs all sorts of rituals, but still suffers terrible pain. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| guramukh sookh oopajai dhukh kadhae n hoee || |
| Happiness emanates from the Gurmukh; he never suffers pain. |

| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੧॥ |
| bin naavai sabh dhukh hai sukh this jis mann vasaaeae ||1|| |
| Without the Name, there is only pain; he alone obtains peace, whose mind is filled with the Name. ||1|| |
|
| ਕਿਉ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੨॥ |
| kio paaeinih ddohaaganee dhukhee rain vihaae ||2|| |
| How can the forsaken brides meet Him? Their life night passes in pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਅਨ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਭੋਲਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| an ras mehi bholaaeiaa bin naamai dhukh paae || |
| He wanders around, engrossed in other pleasures, but without the Naam, he suffers in pain. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| bin naavai sukh n paaeeai naa dhukh vichahu jaae || |
| Without the Name, peace is not obtained, and pain does not depart from within. |

| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਮਿਟੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭੇਟੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥੮॥੧॥੨॥ |
| kahu naanak sabh dhukh mittae prabh bhaettae paramaanandh ||8||1||2|| |
| Says Nanak, all my pains have been eradicated, meeting with God, the Lord of Supreme Bliss. ||8||1||2|| |

| The pains of birth and death are removed, O Beloved, when the mortal meets with the Lord, the King. ||1|| |

| ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| sukh dhukh thaeree aagiaa piaarae dhoojee naahee jaae ||3|| |
| Pleasure and pain come by Your Will, O Beloved; they do not come from any other. ||3|| |

| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪੜਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧੬॥ |
| manamukh parrehi thaethaa dhukh laagai vin sathigur mukath n hoee ||16|| |
| The more the self-willed manmukhs read, the more pain they suffer. Without the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||16|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਿ ਸੂਕਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੀੜ ਨ ਖਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥ |
| har har karehi s sookehi naahee naanak peerr n khaahi jeeo || |
| Those who chant the Lord's Name, Har, Har, do not wither, O Nanak; they are not afflicted by pain. |

| ਭਵਰਾ ਫੂਲਿ ਭਵੰਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ |
| bhavaraa fool bhavanthiaa dhukh ath bhaaree raam || |
| O bumble bee, you wander among the flowers, but terrible pain awaits you. |

| ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ਕਾਲੂਖਤ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥ |
| mehaa bikham jam panthh dhuhaelaa kaalookhath moh andhhiaaraa || |
| The path of Death is very arduous and painful; it is stained with the darkness of emotional attachment. |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੋਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੋਵੈ ॥ |
| janam maran dhovai dhukh maettae sehajae hee sukh sovai || |
| The pains of both birth and death are eradicated, and one comes to sleep in peaceful ease. |
|
| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਣਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥ |
| guramukh har parreeai guramukh har suneeai har japath sunath dhukh jaae jeeo || |
| As Gurmukh, read of the Lord; as Gurmukh, hear of the Lord. Chanting and listening to the Lord's Name, pain departs. |

| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਨਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| har har naam japiaa dhukh binasiaa har naam param sukh paaeiaa || |
| Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, pains are removed. Through the Name of the Lord, supreme peace is obtained. |

| ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਉਤਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| janam janam kae kilavikh dhukh outharae har har naam samaaeiaa || |
| The sins and pains of countless incarnations are washed away, and he merges into the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. |

| ਮਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਸਲੋਧੁ ਨਿਰਪ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਲੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| man hiradhai krodhh mehaa bisalodhh nirap dhhaavehi larr dhukh paaeiaa || |
| Their hearts and minds were filled with the horribly poisonous essence of anger. The kings fought their wars and obtained only pain. |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੋਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
| janam maran dhovai dhukh maettae har raamai naam samaaeiaa || |
| The pains of both birth and death are eliminated, and they merge into the Name of the Lord. |

| ਜਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਪੀਰ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਰੀਆ ॥ |
| jis laagee peer piranm kee so jaanai jareeaa || |
| Only those who feel the pain of this love, know how to endure it. |
|
| ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਲਾਥੇ ਦੂਖ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥ |
| vaddabhaagee paaeae naam dhhiaaeae laathhae dhookh santhaapai || |
| By great good fortune, I obtained it, and I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; my pains and sufferings have been taken away. |
