| ਦੁਖ ਦਾਰਿਦ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਸਹਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰ ॥ |
| dhukh dhaaridh apavithrathaa naasehi naam adhhaar || |
| Pain, poverty and impurity are removed, with the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. |

| ਦੂਖ ਹਰੈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| dhookh harai bhavajal tharai man chindhiaa fal paae || |
| Your pains shall depart - swim across the terrifying world-ocean, and obtain the fruits of your mind's desires. |
|
| ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਕਾ ਦੇਹ ਕਰਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ॥ |
| harakh sog kaa dhaeh kar baadhhiou || |
| This body is the embodiment of pleasure and pain. |
|
| ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸਹਸਾ ਗਇਓ ਸਰਨਿ ਗਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥ |
| dhukh binasae sehasaa gaeiou saran gehee har raae || |
| My pain is gone, and my sorrows have departed, since I took to the Sanctuary of the Lord, my King. |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਪਰਹਰੀ ॥੨॥ |
| naanak naam pavith har mukh bolee sabh dhukh pareharee ||2|| |
| O Nanak , the Lord's Name is sacred and pure; chanting it, all my pain has been taken away. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਿਨੀ ਤੂ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ |
| jinee thoo eik man sach dhhiaaeiaa thin kaa sabh dhukh gavaaeiaa || |
| Those who meditate on You, O True Lord with one-pointed mind, are rid of all their pain. |
|
| ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਪਿਛਾਹਾ ਸਟੀਅਨਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਪਟੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ |
| koorriaar pishhaahaa satteean koorr hiradhai kapatt mehaa dhukh paavai || |
| The false ones are left behind; because of the falsehood and deceit in their hearts, they suffer in terrible pain. |
|
| ਓਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਰੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਝਖਿ ਮਰਦੇ ਕੜੀਐ ॥੯॥ |
| ounhaa andhar hor mukh hor hai bikh maaeiaa no jhakh maradhae karreeai ||9|| |
| Deep within them is one thing, and in their mouths is another; they suck in the poison of Maya, and then they painfully waste away. ||9|| |
|
| ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਸਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਉਖੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
| jis dhee saevaa keethee fir laekhaa mangeeai saa saevaa aoukhee hoee || |
| Serving him, who will be called to answer for his account? That service is painful and useless. |
|
| ਕਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਖਟੇ ਕਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਇਆ ॥ |
| kiaa ouhu khattae kiaa ouhu khaavai jis andhar sehasaa dhukh paeiaa || |
| What shall he earn, and what shall he eat? Within his heart, there is only cynicism and pain. |
|
| ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਭੁਖਾ ਭੁਖ ਕੂਕਾਹੀ ॥ |
| thin kee bhukh kadhae n outharai nith bhukhaa bhukh kookaahee || |
| Their hunger shall never depart; afflicted by constant hunger, they cry out in pain. |
|
| ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰੁ ਦੁਖ ਖੂਹੁ ਹੈ ਓਥੈ ਪਕੜਿ ਓਹੁ ਢੋਇਆ ॥ |
| narak ghor dhukh khoohu hai outhhai pakarr ouhu dtoeiaa || |
| He is caught and thrown into the most horrible hell, the well of pain and suffering. |
|
| ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕੋ ਨ ਸੁਣੇ ਓਹੁ ਅਉਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਰੋਇਆ ॥ |
| kook pukaar ko n sunae ouhu aoukhaa hoe hoe roeiaa || |
| No one listens to his shrieks and cries; he cries out in pain and misery. |
|
| ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਮਰਥਲ ਸੇਈ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਸੂਲੀਆ ॥ |
| jinaa andhar oumarathhal saeee jaanan sooleeaa || |
| Those who have a festering boil within - they alone know its pain. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਸਦ ਘੁਮਿ ਘੋਲੀਆ ॥ |
| har jaanehi saeee birahu ho thin vittahu sadh ghum gholeeaa || |
| Those who know the pain of separation from the Lord - I am forever a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. |
|
| ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| jan naanak naam salaahi thoo janam maran dhukh jaae ||1|| |
| O servant Nanak, praise the Naam; the pains of birth and death shall come to an end. ||1|| |
|
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਗਣਤੈ ਘੁਸੀਐ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ |
| sathigur kee ganathai ghuseeai dhukhae dhukh vihaae || |
| If they miss out on being counted by the True Guru, they shall pass their lives in pain and misery. |
|
| ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣਾ ਕਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥ |
| narak ghor bahu dhukh ghanae akirathaghanaa kaa thhaan || |
| In the most horrible hell, there is terrible pain and suffering. It is the place of the ungrateful. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਖਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਇ ॥ |
| maaeiaa mohu sabh dhukh hai dhukh binasai dhukh roe || |
| The love of Maya is total pain; in pain they perish, and in pain they cry out. |
|
| ਜਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋ ਜੰਤੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ |
| j vin sathigur kae man mannae kanm karaaeae so janth mehaa dhukh paavai ||2|| |
| One who is not pleasing to the Mind of the True Guru may do his deeds, but that being will only suffer in terrible pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ |
| janam maran dhukh kattiaa har bhaettiaa purakh sujaan || |
| The pains of birth and death are eradicated, upon meeting the All-knowing Lord, the Primal Being. |
|
| ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੁਖ ਸੇਤੀ ਜੁਤੇ ॥ |
| keethaa paaein aapanaa dhukh saethee juthae || |
| They receive the consequences of their own actions, and are yoked to their pain. |
|
| ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥ |
| sadhaa sadhaa gun oucharai dhukh dhaaladh gaeiaa bilaae || |
| Forever and ever, chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and pain and poverty shall run away. |
|
| ਸਾਧੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਕਲਿ ਸਾਗਰ ॥੩॥ |
| saadhhoo sukh paavehi kal saagar ||3|| |
| the Holy find peace in this ocean of pain. ||3|| |
|
| ਉਪਜਤ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਰੋਵਤ ਰਹਿਬੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| oupajath binasath rovath rehibo ||1|| rehaao || |
| the person continues coming and going in reincarnation, crying out in pain. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸੁਖ ਕੀਓ ਬਿਸਰਾਮ ॥ |
| dhukh binasae sukh keeou bisaraam || |
| Pain has been eliminated, and I dwell in peac and comfort. |
|
| ਲਾਗੀ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਪੀਰ ॥ |
| laagee hoe s jaanai peer || |
| He alone knows it, who feels the pain of such love; |
|
| ਕਿਨਿ ਓਇ ਚੀਤੇ ਚੀਤਨਹਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ |
| kin oue cheethae cheethanehaarae ||1|| |
| - who is the painter who painted them? ||1|| |
|
| ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਂਗਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| sukh maangath dhukh aagai aavai || |
| People beg for pleasure, but pain comes instead. |
|
| ਕਉਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਕੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੰਤਾਪੋ ॥੧॥ |
| koun marai ko dhaee santhaapo ||1|| |
| Who dies? Who inflicts pain? ||1|| |
|
| ਸਰਜੀਉ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਨਿਰਜੀਉ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਕਉ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| sarajeeo kaattehi nirajeeo poojehi anth kaal ko bhaaree || |
| You murder living beings and worship lifeless things; at your very last moment, you shall suffer in terrible pain. |
|
| ਜੀਵਨ ਮਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਦੋਊ ਤਹ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ |
| jeevan mirath n dhukh sukh biaapai sunn samaadhh dhooo theh naahee ||1|| |
| No life or death, no pain or pleasure is felt there. There is only the Primal Trance of Samaadhi, and no duality. ||1|| |
|
| ਮਰਤ ਨ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਓਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |

| I do not die or suffer pain or separation. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਧਾਵਤ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਅਬ ਦੁਖ ਕਰਿ ਹਮ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਰੇ ॥ |
| dhhaavath jon janam bhram thhaakae ab dhukh kar ham haariou rae || |
| I have wandered in doubt and confusion, through birth and reincarnation; now, I am so tired. I am suffering in pain and wasting away. |

| ਚਚਾ ਰਚਿਤ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ |
| chachaa rachith chithr hai bhaaree || |
| CHACHA: He painted the great picture of the world. |
|
| ਤਜਿ ਚਿਤ੍ਰੈ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਚਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥ |
| thaj chithrai chaethahu chithakaaree || |
| Forget this picture, and remember the Painter. |
|
| ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਇਹੈ ਅਵਝੇਰਾ ॥ |
| chithr bachithr eihai avajhaeraa || |
| This wondrous painting is now the problem. |
|
| ਤਜਿ ਚਿਤ੍ਰੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਚਿਤੇਰਾ ॥੧੨॥ |
| thaj chithrai chith raakh chithaeraa ||12|| |
| Forget this picture and focus your consciousness on the Painter. ||12|| |
|
| ਤਾ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਬਹੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥ |
| thaa kaaran biaapai bahu sog || |
| Because of that, they suffer in terrible pain. |
|
| ਕਾਲ ਕਲਪਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ |
| kaal kalapanaa kadhae n khaae || |
| The pain of death never consumes that person |
|
| ਜਰਾ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਫੇਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥ |
| jaraa maran dhukh faer n hoe ||6|| |
| They shall never again suffer the pains of old age and death. ||6|| |
|
| ਛੂਟੈ ਸੰਸਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥ |
| shhoottai sansaa mitt jaahi dhukh || |
| Your doubts shall be eradicated, and your pains eliminated, |
|
| ਤਉ ਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਕਟ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
| tho jonee sankatt bahur n aavai || |
| you will not have to suffer the pains of reincarnation again. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੋਊ ਏਕ ਸਮ ਧਰੈ ॥ |
| gur mil dhooo eaek sam dhharai || |
| Meeting the Guru, one comes to look alike upon pleasure and pain, |
|
| ਮੇਰੀ ਹਰਹੁ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਜਨ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥ |
| maeree harahu bipath jan karahu subhaaee || |
| Take away my pains, and bless Your humble servant with Your Sublime Love. |
|
| ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਜੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ |
| har dhhiaavahu santhahu jee sabh dhookh visaaranehaaraa || |
| So meditate on the Lord, O Saints; He is the One who takes away all pain. |

| ਤਿਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ |
| thith bhookhai khaae chaleeahi dhookh ||1|| |
| then that hunger shall consume his pains. ||1|| |
|
| ਦੁਖੁ ਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ |
| dhukh anhaeraa vichahu jaae ||3|| |
| and then, pain and darkness are dispelled from within. ||3|| |
|
| ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਨਿ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥ |
| dhukh bikhiaa sukh than pareharai || |
| The pain of corruption destroys the body's peace. |
|
| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| dhukh sukh saach karathae prabh paas ||1|| rehaao || |
| Pain and pleasure are in the Hands of God, the True Creator. ||1||Pause|| |
