| ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| naam nidhhaan har man vasai houmai dhukh sabh jaae || |
| If the Treasure of the Name of the Lord abides within the mind, egotism and pain are totally eliminated. |

| ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਈ ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਸਵੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ |

| Even in dreams, they find no peace; they sleep immersed in pain. ||2|| |

| ਹੁਕਮੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ॥ |
| hukamee outham neech hukam likh dhukh sukh paaeeahi || |
| By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained. |

| ਦੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| dhukh parehar sukh ghar lai jaae || |
| Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall come to your home. |

| ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੮॥ |

| ਉਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ |
| outh bhookhai khaae chaleeahi dhookh ||1|| |
| that hunger shall consume his pain. ||1|| |

| ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ ਚੁਭੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ |
| jio jio chalehi chubhai dhukh paavehi jamakaal sehehi sir ddanddaa hae ||2|| |
| The more they walk away, the deeper it pierces them, and the more they suffer in pain, until finally, the Messenger of Death smashes his club against their heads. ||2|| |

| ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭਵ ਖੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥ |
| har jan har har naam samaanae dhukh janam maran bhav khanddaa hae || |
| The humble servants of the Lord are absorbed in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. The pain of birth and the fear of death are eradicated. |
|
| ਪੰਚੇ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਭਰੇ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
| panchae runnae dhukh bharae binasae dhoojai bhaae ||1|| |
| The five relatives (the senses) weep and wail painfully, and waste away through the love of duality. ||1|| |
|
| ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੁ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥੧੮॥ |
| naanak eihu man maar mil bhee fir dhukh n hoe ||5||18|| |
| O Nanak, conquer and subdue this mind; meet with the Lord, and you shall never again suffer in pain. ||5||18|| |
|
| ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਲਹਾਨੁ ॥ |
| bharamae bhoolaa dhukh ghano jam maar karai khulehaan || |
| They wander lost and confused, deceived by doubt, suffering in terrible pain. The Messenger of Death shall beat them to a pulp. |
|
| ਫਾਹੀ ਫਾਥੇ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਉ ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥ |
| faahee faathhae mirag jio dhookh ghano nith roe ||2|| |
| Like the deer caught in the trap, they suffer in terrible agony; they continually cry out in pain. ||2|| |
|
| ਜਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਸਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| jaa dhukh laagai thaa thujhai samaalee ||1|| rehaao || |
| But when the pain comes, then I call upon You. ||1||Pause|| |

| ਕੂੜਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਕਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਇ ॥ |
| koorraa rang kasunbh kaa binas jaae dhukh roe || |
| The color of the world is false and weak; when it washes away, people cry out in pain. |
|
| ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥ |
| sabadh n cheenai sadhaa dhukh har dharagehi path khoe || |
| They do not comprehend the Word of the Shabad. They suffer in pain forever, and lose their honor in the Court of the Lord. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੁਖ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਜੋਹੇ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੇ ॥ |
| anadhin dhukh kamaavadhae nith johae jam jaalae || |
| Night and day, they suffer in pain; they see the noose of Death always hovering above them. |
|
| ਆਪਣਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥ |
| aapanaa dhharam gavaavehi boojhehi naahee anadhin dhukh vihaanee || |
| They lose their faith, they have no understanding; night and day, they suffer in pain. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥ |
| gur kai bhaanai jo chalai dhukh n paavai koe ||3|| |
| One who walks in harmony with the Guru's Will shall not suffer in pain. ||3|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਦੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ |
| bin gur needh n aavee dhukhee rain vihaae || |
| Without the Guru, she finds no sleep, and she passes her life-night in pain. |
|
| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ |
| dhoojai bhaae dhukh laaeidhaa bahuthee dhaee sajaae || |
| In the love of duality, people suffer in pain, condemned to terrible punishment. |
|
| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| janam maran dhukh pareharai sabadh rehiaa bharapoor ||1|| rehaao || |
| He shall remove the pains of death and rebirth; the Word of the Shabad shall fill you to overflowing. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ |
| gur kai sabadh pashhaaneeai dhukh houmai vichahu gavaae || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is realized, and the pain of egotism is eradicated from within. |
|
| ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| anadhin naamae rathiaa dhukh bikhiaa vichahu jaae || |
| Night and day, remain attuned to the Naam, and the pain of corruption shall be dispelled from within. |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਪੀੜ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| bin gur rog n thuttee houmai peerr n jaae || |
| Without the Guru, the disease is not cured, and the pain of egotism is not removed. |
|
| ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ |
| gur sabadhee sach paaeiaa dhookh nivaaranehaar || |
| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they obtain the True One, the Destroyer of pain. |
|
| ਗਰਬਿ ਅਟੀਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ |
| garab atteeaa thrisanaa jalehi dhukh paavehi dhoojai bhaae || |
| Filled with arrogance, they burn with desire; they suffer in the pain of the love of duality. |
|
| ਜਗਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ |
| jag houmai mail dhukh paaeiaa mal laagee dhoojai bhaae || |
| The world is polluted with the filth of egotism, suffering in pain. This filth sticks to them because of their love of duality. |
|
| ਮਾਇਆ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ |
| maaeiaa jaevadd dhukh nehee sabh bhav thhakae sansaar || |
| There is no pain as great as the pain of Maya; it drives people to wander all around the world, until they become exhausted. |
|
| ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਲਾ ਕਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥ |
| mai man than birahu ath agalaa kio preetham milai ghar aae || |
| Within my mind and body is the intense pain of separation; how can my Beloved come to meet me in my home? |
|
| ਜਾ ਦੇਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| jaa dhaekhaa prabh aapanaa prabh dhaekhiai dhukh jaae || |
| When I see my God, seeing God Himself, my pain is taken away. |
|
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਪੜਦਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਈਆਸਿ ॥ |
| anthar agiaan dhukh bharam hai vich parradhaa dhoor peeaas || |
| There is ignorance within, and the pain of doubt, like a separating screen. |
|
| ਸਜਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਢੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
| sajan sathigur purakh hai dhukh kadtai houmai maar ||1|| rehaao || |
| The True Guru, the Primal Being, is your Friend, who shall drive out pain and subdue your ego. ||1||Pause|| |
|
| ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਨਹ ਵਿਆਪਈ ਜੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| dhukh bhukh neh viaapee jae sukhadhaathaa man hoe || |
| Pain and hunger shall not oppress you, if the Giver of Peace comes into your mind. |
|
| ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਘਣਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਮੂਲੇ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| jis simarath sukh hoe ghanaa dhukh dharadh n moolae hoe || |
| Remembering Him in meditation, a profound peace is obtained. Pain and suffering will not touch you at all. |

| ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੀਐ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੧॥ |
| janam maran dhukh kaatteeai laagai sehaj dhhiaan ||1|| |
| The pains of birth and death are taken away; we are intuitively centered on His Meditation. ||1|| |

| ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੋਖ ਉਤਾਰਿਅਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਖਸਿੰਦੁ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੮੨॥ |
| naanak sagalae dhokh outhaarian prabh paarabreham bakhasindh ||4||12||82|| |
| O Nanak, all pain has been washed away, by the Supreme Lord God, the Forgiver. ||4||12||82|| |

| ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੈ ਸਤ ਭਾਇ ॥ |
| dheen dharadh dhukh bhanjanaa saevak kai sath bhaae || |
| He is the Destroyer of the pain and suffering of the meek. He bears True Love for His servants. |

| ਪਿਰੁ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਧਨ ਵਾਂਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਇ ॥ |
| pir paradhaesee jae thheeai dhhan vaandtee jhooraee || |
| When the Husband goes away, the bride suffers in the pain of separation, |

| ਵਿਣੁ ਵਖਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥ |
| vin vakhar dhukh agalaa koorr muthee koorriaar ||2|| |
| Without this commodity, there is great pain. The false are ruined by falsehood. ||2|| |
|
| ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਭ ਪੀਰ ॥ |
| niramal saacho man vasai so jaanai abh peer || |
| The Pure, True Lord abides within the mind; He knows the pain of our hearts. |

| ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥ |
| sukh dhukh sam kar jaaneeahi sabadh bhaedh sukh hoe ||5|| |
| Those who see pain and pleasure as one and the same find peace; they are pierced through by the Shabad. ||5|| |
|
| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਿਉ ਕਲਰ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥ |
| bin naavai dhukh dhaehuree jio kalar kee bheeth || |
| Without the Name, the body suffers in pain; it crumbles like a wall of sand. |

| ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ |
| sabadh salaahee man vasai houmai dhukh jal jaao || |
| With the Shabads of Praise abiding in the mind, the pain of egotism is burnt away. |

| ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਘਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ |
| dhookh ghano dhohaaganee naa ghar saej bhathaar ||1|| |
| The discarded bride suffers terrible pain; her Husband does not come to the bed of her home. ||1|| |
|
| ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਣੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਸੁਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ |
| sukhadhaathaa dhukh maettano sathigur asur sanghaar ||3|| |
| The True Guru is the Giver of peace, the Dispeller of pain, the Destroyer of demons. ||3|| |
|
| ਘਟੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲੋ ਜਮੁ ਪਕੜੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥੫॥ |
| ghatt binasai dhukh agalo jam pakarrai pashhuthaae ||5|| |
| When the pitcher of the body bursts, there is terrible pain; those who are caught by the Minister of Death regret and repent. ||5|| |

| ਚਿਤੇ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਧਉਲਹਰ ਬਗੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥ |
| chithae dhisehi dhhoulehar bagae bank dhuaar || |
| There are painted mansions to behold, white-washed, with beautiful doors; |
